Quran chapter: Chapter 44: Smoke (Al-Dukhan)‎

It will envelop the people; this is a painful retribution.

يَغشَى النّاسَ هٰذا عَذابٌ أَليمٌ

yaghshan naasa haazaa ‘azaabun aleem

“Our Lord, relieve this retribution for us; we are believers.”

رَبَّنَا اكشِف عَنَّا العَذابَ إِنّا مُؤمِنونَ

rabbanak shif ‘annal ‘azaaba innaa mu’minoon

(God’s Messenger of the Covenant*)

Now that it is too late, they remember! An enlightening messenger had come to them.*

أَنّىٰ لَهُمُ الذِّكرىٰ وَقَد جاءَهُم رَسولٌ مُبينٌ

annaa lahumuz zikraa wa qad jaaa’ahum Rasoolum mubeen

*44:13 The sum of sura and verse numbers (44+13) is 57, 19×3, and this Quranic code was proclaimed by God’s Messenger of the Covenant (Appendices 1, 2, & 26).

But they turned away from him, saying, “Well educated, but crazy!”

ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوا عَنهُ وَقالوا مُعَلَّمٌ مَجنونٌ

summaa tawallaw ‘anhu wa qaaloo mu’allamum majnoon

We will relieve the retribution for awhile; you will soon revert.

إِنّا كاشِفُوا العَذابِ قَليلًا إِنَّكُم عائِدونَ

innaa kaashiful ‘azaabi qaleelaa; innakum ‘aaa’idoon

The day we strike the big stroke, we will avenge.

يَومَ نَبطِشُ البَطشَةَ الكُبرىٰ إِنّا مُنتَقِمونَ

yawma nabtishul batsha tal kubraa innaa muntaqimoon

We have tested before them the people of Pharaoh; an honorable messenger went to them.

وَلَقَد فَتَنّا قَبلَهُم قَومَ فِرعَونَ وَجاءَهُم رَسولٌ كَريمٌ

wa laqad fatannaa qablahum qawma Fir’awna wa jaaa’ahum Rasoolun kareem

Proclaiming: “Listen to me, servants of God. I am an honest messenger to you.”

أَن أَدّوا إِلَىَّ عِبادَ اللَّهِ إِنّى لَكُم رَسولٌ أَمينٌ

an addooo ilaiya ‘ibaadal laahi innee lakum Rasoolun ameen

And, “Do not transgress against God. I bring to you powerful proofs.

وَأَن لا تَعلوا عَلَى اللَّهِ إِنّى ءاتيكُم بِسُلطٰنٍ مُبينٍ

wa al laa ta’loo ‘alal laahi innee aateekum bisultaanim mubeen

“I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, if you oppose me.

وَإِنّى عُذتُ بِرَبّى وَرَبِّكُم أَن تَرجُمونِ

wa innee ‘uztu bi Rabbee wa rabbikum an tarjumoon
