Praise be to God, who created the heavens and the earth, and made the darkness and the light. Yet, those who disbelieve in their Lord continue to deviate.
الحَمدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذى خَلَقَ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالأَرضَ وَجَعَلَ الظُّلُمٰتِ وَالنّورَ ثُمَّ الَّذينَ كَفَروا بِرَبِّهِم يَعدِلونَ
alhamdu lillaahil lazee khalaqas samaawaati wal arda wa ja’alaz zulumaati wannoor; summal lazeena kafaroo bi Rabbihim ya’diloon
He is the One who created you from mud, then predetermined your life span, a life span that is known only to Him. Yet, you continue to doubt.
هُوَ الَّذى خَلَقَكُم مِن طينٍ ثُمَّ قَضىٰ أَجَلًا وَأَجَلٌ مُسَمًّى عِندَهُ ثُمَّ أَنتُم تَمتَرونَ
huwal lazee khalaqakum min teenin summa qadaaa ajalanw wa ajalum musamman ‘indahoo summa antum tamtaroon
He is the one God in the heavens and the earth. He knows your secrets and your declarations, and He knows everything you earn.
وَهُوَ اللَّهُ فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَفِى الأَرضِ يَعلَمُ سِرَّكُم وَجَهرَكُم وَيَعلَمُ ما تَكسِبونَ
wa Huwal laahu fissamaawaati wa fil ardi ya’lamu sirrakum wa jahrakum wa ya’lamu maa taksiboon
No matter what kind of proof comes to them from their Lord, they turn away from it, in aversion.
وَما تَأتيهِم مِن ءايَةٍ مِن ءايٰتِ رَبِّهِم إِلّا كانوا عَنها مُعرِضينَ
wa maa ta’teehim min Aayatim min Aayaati Rabbihim illaa kaanoo ‘anhaa mu’rideen
Since they rejected the truth when it came to them, they have incurred the consequences of their heedlessness.
فَقَد كَذَّبوا بِالحَقِّ لَمّا جاءَهُم فَسَوفَ يَأتيهِم أَنبٰؤُا۟ ما كانوا بِهِ يَستَهزِءونَ
faqad kazzaboo bilhaqqi lammaa jaaa’ahum fasawfa ya’teehim ambaaa’u maa kaanoo bihee yastahzi’oon
Have they not seen how many generations before them we have annihilated? We established them on earth more than we did for you, and we showered them with blessings, generously, and we provided them with flowing streams. We then annihilated them because of their sins, and we substituted another generation in their place.
أَلَم يَرَوا كَم أَهلَكنا مِن قَبلِهِم مِن قَرنٍ مَكَّنّٰهُم فِى الأَرضِ ما لَم نُمَكِّن لَكُم وَأَرسَلنَا السَّماءَ عَلَيهِم مِدرارًا وَجَعَلنَا الأَنهٰرَ تَجرى مِن تَحتِهِم فَأَهلَكنٰهُم بِذُنوبِهِم وَأَنشَأنا مِن بَعدِهِم قَرنًا ءاخَرينَ
alam yaraw kam ahlaknaa min qablihim min qarnim makkannaahum fil ardi maa lam numakkil lakum wa arsalnas samaaa’a ‘alaihim midraaranw wa ja’alnal anhaara tajree min tahtihim fa ahlak naahum bizunoobihim wa ansha’naa mim ba’dihim qarnan aakhareen
Even if we sent down [to you]* a physical book, written on paper, and they touched it with their hands, those who disbelieved would have said, “This is no more than clever magic.”
وَلَو نَزَّلنا عَلَيكَ كِتٰبًا فى قِرطاسٍ فَلَمَسوهُ بِأَيديهِم لَقالَ الَّذينَ كَفَروا إِن هٰذا إِلّا سِحرٌ مُبينٌ
wa law nazzalnaa ‘alaika Kitaaban fee qirtaasin falamasoohu bi aideehim laqaalal lazeena kafarooo in haazaaa illaa sihrum mubeen
*6:7 The Arabic word “alayka”, [to you], occurs in the Arabic text of the above verse and was translated as “to them”.
They also said, “If only an angel could come down with him!” Had we sent an angel, the whole matter would have been terminated, and they would no longer be respited.
وَقالوا لَولا أُنزِلَ عَلَيهِ مَلَكٌ وَلَو أَنزَلنا مَلَكًا لَقُضِىَ الأَمرُ ثُمَّ لا يُنظَرونَ
wa qaaloo law laaa unzila alaihi malakunw wa law anzalna malakal laqudiyal amru summa laa yunzaroon
(Requirements of the Test)
Had we sent an angel, we would have sent him in the form of a man, and we would have kept them just as confused as they are confused now.
وَلَو جَعَلنٰهُ مَلَكًا لَجَعَلنٰهُ رَجُلًا وَلَلَبَسنا عَلَيهِم ما يَلبِسونَ
wa law ja’alnaahu malakal laja’alnaahu rajulanw wa lalabasnaa ‘alaihim maa yalbisoon
Messengers before you have been ridiculed. It is those who mocked them who suffered the consequences of their ridiculing.
وَلَقَدِ استُهزِئَ بِرُسُلٍ مِن قَبلِكَ فَحاقَ بِالَّذينَ سَخِروا مِنهُم ما كانوا بِهِ يَستَهزِءونَ
wa laqadis tuhzi’a bi-Rusulim min qablika fahaaqa billazeena sakhiroo minhum maa kaanoo bihee yastahzi’oon
