Quran chapter: Chapter 9: Ultimatum (Bara’ah)‎

(No Basmalah*)

An ultimatum is herein issued from God and His messenger to the idol worshipers who enter into a treaty with you.

بَراءَةٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرَسولِهِ إِلَى الَّذينَ عٰهَدتُم مِنَ المُشرِكينَ

baraaa’atum minal laahi wa Rasooliheee ilal lazeena ‘aahattum minal mushrikeen

*9:1 The absence of Basmalah from this sura is not only a profound sign from the Almighty Author of the Quran that this sura has been tampered with, but also represents an awsome miracle in its own right. See the details in Appendices 24 & 29. *9:1 & *9:127 This is the only sura that is not prefixed with the Basmalah. This phenomenon has puzzled the students of the Quran for 14 centuries, and many theories were advanced to explain it. Now we realize that the conspicuous absence of the Basmalah serves three purposes: (1) It represents an advance divine proclamation that the idol worshipers were destined to tamper with the Quran by adding 2 false verses (9:128-129). (2) It demonstrates one of the functions of God’s mathematical code in the Quran, namely, to guard the Quran against any alteration. (3) It provides additional miraculous features of the Quran’s code. Due to their extraordinary importance, the details are given in Appendices 24 and 29. One immediate observation is that the number of occurrences of the word “God” at the end of Sura 9 is 1273 (19×67). If the two false verses 128 & 129 are included, this phenomenon – and many more – will vanish.

Therefore, roam the earth freely for four months, and know that you cannot escape from God, and that God humiliates the disbelievers.

فَسيحوا فِى الأَرضِ أَربَعَةَ أَشهُرٍ وَاعلَموا أَنَّكُم غَيرُ مُعجِزِى اللَّهِ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ مُخزِى الكٰفِرينَ

faseehoo fil ardi arba’ata ashhurinw wa’lamoooannakum ghairu mu’jizil laahi wa annal laaha mukhzil kaafireen

A proclamation is herein issued from God and His messenger to all the people on the great day of pilgrimage, that God has disowned the idol worshipers, and so did His messenger. Thus, if you repent, it would be better for you. But if you turn away, then know that you can never escape from God. Promise those who disbelieve a painful retribution.

وَأَذٰنٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرَسولِهِ إِلَى النّاسِ يَومَ الحَجِّ الأَكبَرِ أَنَّ اللَّهَ بَرىءٌ مِنَ المُشرِكينَ وَرَسولُهُ فَإِن تُبتُم فَهُوَ خَيرٌ لَكُم وَإِن تَوَلَّيتُم فَاعلَموا أَنَّكُم غَيرُ مُعجِزِى اللَّهِ وَبَشِّرِ الَّذينَ كَفَروا بِعَذابٍ أَليمٍ

wa azaanum minal laahi wa Rasooliheee ilan naasi yawmal Hajjil Akbari annal laaha bareee’um minal mushrikeena wa Rasooluh; fa-in tubtum fahuwa khairullakum wa in tawallaitum fa’lamooo annakum ghairu mu’jizil laah; wa bashiril lazeena kafaroo biazaabin aleem

If the idol worshipers sign a peace treaty with you, and do not violate it, nor band together with others against you, you shall fulfill your treaty with them until the expiration date. God loves the righteous.

إِلَّا الَّذينَ عٰهَدتُم مِنَ المُشرِكينَ ثُمَّ لَم يَنقُصوكُم شَيـًٔا وَلَم يُظٰهِروا عَلَيكُم أَحَدًا فَأَتِمّوا إِلَيهِم عَهدَهُم إِلىٰ مُدَّتِهِم إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ المُتَّقينَ

illal lazeena ‘aahattum minal mushrikeena summa lam yanqusookum shai’anw-wa lam yuzaahiroo ‘alaikum ahadan fa atimmooo ilaihim ‘ahdahum ilaa muddatihim; innal laaha yuhibbul muttaqeen

Once the Sacred Months are past, (and they refuse to make peace) you may kill the idol worshipers when you encounter them, punish them, and resist every move they make. If they repent and observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and give the obligatory charity (Zakat), you shall let them go. God is Forgiver, Most Merciful.

فَإِذَا انسَلَخَ الأَشهُرُ الحُرُمُ فَاقتُلُوا المُشرِكينَ حَيثُ وَجَدتُموهُم وَخُذوهُم وَاحصُروهُم وَاقعُدوا لَهُم كُلَّ مَرصَدٍ فَإِن تابوا وَأَقامُوا الصَّلوٰةَ وَءاتَوُا الزَّكوٰةَ فَخَلّوا سَبيلَهُم إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفورٌ رَحيمٌ

fa izansalakhal Ashhurul Hurumu faqtulul mushrikeena haisu wajattumoohum wa khuzoohum wahsuroohum waq’udoo lahum kulla marsad; fa-in taaboo wa aqaamus Salaata wa aatawuz Zakaata fakhalloo sabeelahum; innal laaha Ghafoorur Raheem

If one of the idol worshipers sought safe passage with you, you shall grant him safe passage, so that he can hear the word of God, then send him back to his place of security. That is because they are people who do not know.

وَإِن أَحَدٌ مِنَ المُشرِكينَ استَجارَكَ فَأَجِرهُ حَتّىٰ يَسمَعَ كَلٰمَ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ أَبلِغهُ مَأمَنَهُ ذٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُم قَومٌ لا يَعلَمونَ

wa in ahadum minal mushrikeenas tajaaraka fa ajirhu hattaa yasma’a Kalaamal laahi summa ablighhu maa manah; zaalika bi annahum qawmul laa ya’lamoon

How can the idol worshipers demand any pledge from God and from His messenger? Exempted are those who have signed a peace treaty with you at the Sacred Masjid. If they honor and uphold such a treaty, you shall uphold it as well. God loves the righteous.

كَيفَ يَكونُ لِلمُشرِكينَ عَهدٌ عِندَ اللَّهِ وَعِندَ رَسولِهِ إِلَّا الَّذينَ عٰهَدتُم عِندَ المَسجِدِ الحَرامِ فَمَا استَقٰموا لَكُم فَاستَقيموا لَهُم إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ المُتَّقينَ

kaifa yakoonu lilmush rikeena ‘ahdun ‘indallaahi wa ‘inda Rasoolihee illal lazeena ‘aahattum ‘indal Masjidil Haraami famas taqaamoo lakum fastaqeemoo lahum; innallaaha yuhibbul muttaqeen

How can they (demand a pledge) when they never observed any rights of kinship between you and them, nor any covenant, if they ever had a chance to prevail. They pacified you with lip service, while their hearts were in opposition, and most of them are wicked.

كَيفَ وَإِن يَظهَروا عَلَيكُم لا يَرقُبوا فيكُم إِلًّا وَلا ذِمَّةً يُرضونَكُم بِأَفوٰهِهِم وَتَأبىٰ قُلوبُهُم وَأَكثَرُهُم فٰسِقونَ

kaifa wa iny-yazharoo ‘alaikum laa yarquboo feekum illanw wa laa zimmah; yurdoo nakum biafwaahihim wa ta’baa quloobuhum wa aksaruhum faasiqoon

They traded away God’s revelations for a cheap price. Consequently, they repulsed the people from His path. Miserable indeed is what they did!

اشتَرَوا بِـٔايٰتِ اللَّهِ ثَمَنًا قَليلًا فَصَدّوا عَن سَبيلِهِ إِنَّهُم ساءَ ما كانوا يَعمَلونَ

ishtaraw bi  Aayaatil laahi samanan qaleelan fasaddoo ‘an sabeelih; innahum saaa’a maa kaanoo ya’maloon

They never observe any rights of kinship towards any believer, nor do they uphold their covenants; these are the real transgressors.

لا يَرقُبونَ فى مُؤمِنٍ إِلًّا وَلا ذِمَّةً وَأُولٰئِكَ هُمُ المُعتَدونَ

laa yarquboona fee mu’minin illanw wa laa zimmah wa ulaaa ‘ika humulmu ‘tadoon
