Quran chapter: Chapter 65: Divorce (Al-Talaaq)‎

O you prophet, when you people divorce the women, you shall ensure that a divorce interim is fulfilled. You shall measure such an interim precisely.* You shall reverence God your Lord. Do not evict them from their homes, nor shall you make life miserable for them, to force them to leave on their own, unless they commit a proven adultery. These are God’s laws. Anyone who transgresses God’s laws commits an injustice against himself. You never know; maybe God wills something good to come out of this.

يٰأَيُّهَا النَّبِىُّ إِذا طَلَّقتُمُ النِّساءَ فَطَلِّقوهُنَّ لِعِدَّتِهِنَّ وَأَحصُوا العِدَّةَ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ رَبَّكُم لا تُخرِجوهُنَّ مِن بُيوتِهِنَّ وَلا يَخرُجنَ إِلّا أَن يَأتينَ بِفٰحِشَةٍ مُبَيِّنَةٍ وَتِلكَ حُدودُ اللَّهِ وَمَن يَتَعَدَّ حُدودَ اللَّهِ فَقَد ظَلَمَ نَفسَهُ لا تَدرى لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ يُحدِثُ بَعدَ ذٰلِكَ أَمرًا

yaaa ayyuhan nabiyyu izaa tallaqtummun nisaaa’a fatalliqoohunna li’iddatihinna wa ahsul’iddata wattaqul laaha rabbakum; laa tukhri joohunna min bu-yootihinna wa laa yakhrujna illaaa any ya’teena bifaahishatim mubaiyinah; wa tilka hudoodul laah; wa many yata’adda hudoodal laahi faqad zalama nafsah; laa tadree la’allal laaha yuhdisu ba’dazaalika amraa

*65:1 The divorcee’s interim, before becoming eligible for remarriage, is a waiting period of three menstruations. This ensures that the divorcee was not pregnant (2:228).

Once the interim is fulfilled, you may reconcile with them equitably, or go through with the separation equitably. You shall have two equitable witnesses witness the divorce before God. This is to enlighten those who believe in God and the Last Day. Anyone who reverences God, He will create an exit for him.

فَإِذا بَلَغنَ أَجَلَهُنَّ فَأَمسِكوهُنَّ بِمَعروفٍ أَو فارِقوهُنَّ بِمَعروفٍ وَأَشهِدوا ذَوَى عَدلٍ مِنكُم وَأَقيمُوا الشَّهٰدَةَ لِلَّهِ ذٰلِكُم يوعَظُ بِهِ مَن كانَ يُؤمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَاليَومِ الـٔاخِرِ وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجعَل لَهُ مَخرَجًا

fa izaa balaghna ajalahunna fa amsikoohunna bima’roofin aw faariqoohunna bima’roofinw wa ashhidoo zawai ‘adlim minkum wa aqeemush shahaadata lillaah; zaalikum yoo’azu bihee man kaana yu’minu billaahi wal yawmil aakhir; wa many yattaqil laaha yaj’al lahoo makhrajaa

And will provide for him whence he never expected. Anyone who trusts in God, He suffices him. God’s commands are done. God has decreed for everything its fate.

وَيَرزُقهُ مِن حَيثُ لا يَحتَسِبُ وَمَن يَتَوَكَّل عَلَى اللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسبُهُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بٰلِغُ أَمرِهِ قَد جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لِكُلِّ شَىءٍ قَدرًا

wa yarzuqhu min haisu laa yahtasib; wa many yatawakkal ‘alal laahi fahuwa hasbuh; innal laaha baalighu amrih; qad ja’alal laahu likulli shai’in qadraa

As for the women who have reached menopause, if you have any doubts, their interim shall be three months. As for those who do not menstruate, and discover that they are pregnant, their interim ends upon giving birth. Anyone who reverences God, He makes everything easy for him.

وَالّٰـٔى يَئِسنَ مِنَ المَحيضِ مِن نِسائِكُم إِنِ ارتَبتُم فَعِدَّتُهُنَّ ثَلٰثَةُ أَشهُرٍ وَالّٰـٔى لَم يَحِضنَ وَأُولٰتُ الأَحمالِ أَجَلُهُنَّ أَن يَضَعنَ حَملَهُنَّ وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجعَل لَهُ مِن أَمرِهِ يُسرًا

wallaaa’ee ya’isna minal maheedi min nisaaa ‘ikum inir tabtum fa’iddatuhunna salaasatu ashhurinw wallaaa’ee lam yahidn; wa ulaatul ahmaali ajaluhunna any yada’na hamlahun; wa many yattaqil laaha yaj’al lahoo min amrihee yusraa

This is God’s command that He sends down to you. Anyone who reverences God, He remits his sins, and rewards him generously.

ذٰلِكَ أَمرُ اللَّهِ أَنزَلَهُ إِلَيكُم وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يُكَفِّر عَنهُ سَيِّـٔاتِهِ وَيُعظِم لَهُ أَجرًا

zaalika amrul laahi anzalahoo ilaikum; wa many yattaqil laaha yukaffir ‘anhu saiyi aatihee wa yu’zim lahoo ajraa

You shall allow them to live in the same home in which they lived with you, and do not make life so miserable for them that they leave on their own. If they are pregnant, you shall spend on them until they give birth. If they nurse the infant, you shall pay them for this service. You shall maintain the amicable relations among you. If you disagree, you may hire another woman to nurse the child.

أَسكِنوهُنَّ مِن حَيثُ سَكَنتُم مِن وُجدِكُم وَلا تُضارّوهُنَّ لِتُضَيِّقوا عَلَيهِنَّ وَإِن كُنَّ أُولٰتِ حَملٍ فَأَنفِقوا عَلَيهِنَّ حَتّىٰ يَضَعنَ حَملَهُنَّ فَإِن أَرضَعنَ لَكُم فَـٔاتوهُنَّ أُجورَهُنَّ وَأتَمِروا بَينَكُم بِمَعروفٍ وَإِن تَعاسَرتُم فَسَتُرضِعُ لَهُ أُخرىٰ

askinoohunna min haisu sakantum minw wujdikum wa laa tudaaarroohunna litudaiyiqoo ‘alaihinn; wa in kunna ulaati hamlin fa anfiqoo ‘alaihinna hattaa yada’na hamlahunn; fain arda’na lakum fa aatoo hunna ujoorahunn; wa’tamiroo bainakum bima’roofinw wa in ta’aasartum fasaturdi’u lahooo ukhraa

The rich husband shall provide support in accordance with his means, and the poor shall provide according to the means that God bestowed upon him. God does not impose on any soul more than He has given it. God will provide ease after difficulty.

لِيُنفِق ذو سَعَةٍ مِن سَعَتِهِ وَمَن قُدِرَ عَلَيهِ رِزقُهُ فَليُنفِق مِمّا ءاتىٰهُ اللَّهُ لا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفسًا إِلّا ما ءاتىٰها سَيَجعَلُ اللَّهُ بَعدَ عُسرٍ يُسرًا

liyunfiq zoo sa’atim min sa’atih; wa man qudira ‘alaihi rizquhoo falyunfiq mimmaaa aataahul laah; laa yukalliful laahu nafsan illaa maaa aataahaa; sa yaj’alul laahu ba’da’usriny yusraa

Many a community rebelled against the commands of its Lord and against His messengers. Consequently, we held them strictly accountable, and requited them a terrible requital.

وَكَأَيِّن مِن قَريَةٍ عَتَت عَن أَمرِ رَبِّها وَرُسُلِهِ فَحاسَبنٰها حِسابًا شَديدًا وَعَذَّبنٰها عَذابًا نُكرًا

wa ka ayyim min qaryatin ‘atat ‘an amri Rabbihaa wa Rusulihee fahaasabnaahaa hisaaban shadeedanw wa ‘azzabnaahaa ‘azaaban nukraa

They suffered the consequences of their decisions; a profound loss.

فَذاقَت وَبالَ أَمرِها وَكانَ عٰقِبَةُ أَمرِها خُسرًا

fazaaqat wabbala amrihaa wa kaana ‘aaqibatu amrihaa khusraa

God has prepared for them severe retribution. Therefore, you shall reverence God, O you who possess intelligence and believed. God has sent down to you a message -*

أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لَهُم عَذابًا شَديدًا فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ يٰأُولِى الأَلبٰبِ الَّذينَ ءامَنوا قَد أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ إِلَيكُم ذِكرًا

a’addal laahu lahum ‘azaaban shadeedan fattaqul laaha yaaa ulil albaab, allazeena aammanoo; qad anzalal laahu ilaikum zikraa
