Quran chapter: Chapter 90: The Town (Al-Balad)‎

I solemnly swear by this town.

لا أُقسِمُ بِهٰذَا البَلَدِ

laaa uqsimu bihaazal balad

The town where you live.

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّ بِهٰذَا البَلَدِ

wa anta hillum bihaazal balad

The begetting and the begotten.

وَوالِدٍ وَما وَلَدَ

wa waalidinw wa maa walad

We created the human being to work hard (to redeem himself).*

لَقَد خَلَقنَا الإِنسٰنَ فى كَبَدٍ

laqad khalaqnal insaana fee kabad

Does he think that no one will ever call him to account?

أَيَحسَبُ أَن لَن يَقدِرَ عَلَيهِ أَحَدٌ

ayahsabu al-lai yaqdira ‘alaihi ahad

He boasts, “I spent so much money!”

يَقولُ أَهلَكتُ مالًا لُبَدًا

yaqoolu ahlaktu maalal lubadaa

Does he think that no one sees him?

أَيَحسَبُ أَن لَم يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ

ayahsabu al lam yarahooo ahad

Did we not give him two eyes?

أَلَم نَجعَل لَهُ عَينَينِ

alam naj’al lahoo ‘aynayn

A tongue and two lips?

وَلِسانًا وَشَفَتَينِ

wa lisaananw wa shafatayn

Did we not show him the two paths?

وَهَدَينٰهُ النَّجدَينِ

wa hadaynaahun najdayn
