Most blessed is the One who placed constellations in the sky, and placed in it a lamp, and a shining moon.
تَبارَكَ الَّذى جَعَلَ فِى السَّماءِ بُروجًا وَجَعَلَ فيها سِرٰجًا وَقَمَرًا مُنيرًا
tabaarakal lazee ja’ala fis samaaa’i buroojanw wa ja’ala feehaa siraajanw wa qamaran muneeraa
He is the One who designed the night and the day to alternate: a sufficient proof for those who wish to take heed, or to be appreciative.
وَهُوَ الَّذى جَعَلَ الَّيلَ وَالنَّهارَ خِلفَةً لِمَن أَرادَ أَن يَذَّكَّرَ أَو أَرادَ شُكورًا
wa huwal lazee ja’alal laila wannahaara khilfatan liman araada ‘any yazzakkara aw araadaa shukooraa
(Traits of the Righteous)
The worshipers of the Most Gracious are those who tread the earth gently, and when the ignorant speak to them, they only utter peace.
وَعِبادُ الرَّحمٰنِ الَّذينَ يَمشونَ عَلَى الأَرضِ هَونًا وَإِذا خاطَبَهُمُ الجٰهِلونَ قالوا سَلٰمًا
wa ‘ibaadur Rahmaanil lazeena yamshoona ‘alal ardi hawnanw wa izaa khaata bahumul jaahiloona qaaloo salaamaa
In the privacy of the night, they meditate on their Lord, and fall prostrate.
وَالَّذينَ يَبيتونَ لِرَبِّهِم سُجَّدًا وَقِيٰمًا
wallazeena yabeetoona li Rabbihim sujjadanw wa qiyaamaa
And they say, “Our Lord, spare us the agony of Hell; its retribution is horrendous.
وَالَّذينَ يَقولونَ رَبَّنَا اصرِف عَنّا عَذابَ جَهَنَّمَ إِنَّ عَذابَها كانَ غَرامًا
wallazeena yaqooloona Rabbanas rif ‘annaa ‘azaaba Jahannama inna ‘azaabahaa kaana gharaamaa
“It is the worst abode; the worst destiny.”
إِنَّها ساءَت مُستَقَرًّا وَمُقامًا
innahaa saaa’at mustaqarranw wa muqaamaa
When they give, they are neither extravagant nor stingy; they give in moderation.
وَالَّذينَ إِذا أَنفَقوا لَم يُسرِفوا وَلَم يَقتُروا وَكانَ بَينَ ذٰلِكَ قَوامًا
wallazeena izaaa anfaqoo lam yusrifoo wa lam yaqturoo wa kaana baina zaalika qawaamaa
They never implore beside God any other god, nor do they kill anyone – for God has made life sacred – except in the course of justice. Nor do they commit adultery. Those who commit these offenses will have to pay.
وَالَّذينَ لا يَدعونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلٰهًا ءاخَرَ وَلا يَقتُلونَ النَّفسَ الَّتى حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلّا بِالحَقِّ وَلا يَزنونَ وَمَن يَفعَل ذٰلِكَ يَلقَ أَثامًا
wallazeena laa yad’oona ma’al laahi ilaahan aakhara wa laa yaqtuloonan nafsal latee harramal laahu illaa bilhaqqi wa laa yaznoon; wa mai yaf’al zaalika yalqa ‘athaamaa
Retribution is doubled for them on the Day of Resurrection, and they abide therein humiliated.
يُضٰعَف لَهُ العَذابُ يَومَ القِيٰمَةِ وَيَخلُد فيهِ مُهانًا
yudaa’af lahul ‘azaabu Yawmal Qiyaamati wa yakhlud feehee muhaanaa
Exempted are those who repent, believe, and lead a righteous life. God transforms their sins into credits. God is Forgiver, Most Merciful.
إِلّا مَن تابَ وَءامَنَ وَعَمِلَ عَمَلًا صٰلِحًا فَأُولٰئِكَ يُبَدِّلُ اللَّهُ سَيِّـٔاتِهِم حَسَنٰتٍ وَكانَ اللَّهُ غَفورًا رَحيمًا
illaa man taaba wa ‘aamana wa ‘amila ‘amalan saalihan fa ulaaa’ika yubad dilul laahu saiyi aatihim hasanaat; wa kaanal laahu Ghafoorar Raheemaa
