They said, “Our father, why do you not trust us with Joseph? We will take good care of him.
قالوا يٰأَبانا ما لَكَ لا تَأمَ۫نّا عَلىٰ يوسُفَ وَإِنّا لَهُ لَنٰصِحونَ
qaaloo yaaa abaanaa maa laka laa ta’mannaa ‘alaa Yoosufa wa innaa lahoo lanaa sihoon
They said, “Our father, why do you not trust us with Joseph? We will take good care of him.
قالوا يٰأَبانا ما لَكَ لا تَأمَ۫نّا عَلىٰ يوسُفَ وَإِنّا لَهُ لَنٰصِحونَ
qaaloo yaaa abaanaa maa laka laa ta’mannaa ‘alaa Yoosufa wa innaa lahoo lanaa sihoon
“Send him with us tomorrow to run and play. We will protect him.”
أَرسِلهُ مَعَنا غَدًا يَرتَع وَيَلعَب وَإِنّا لَهُ لَحٰفِظونَ
arsillhu ma’anaa ghadany yarta’ wa yal’ab wa innaa lahoo la haafizoon
He said, “I worry lest you go away with him, then the wolf may devour him while you are not watching him.”
قالَ إِنّى لَيَحزُنُنى أَن تَذهَبوا بِهِ وَأَخافُ أَن يَأكُلَهُ الذِّئبُ وَأَنتُم عَنهُ غٰفِلونَ
qaala innee la yahzununeee an tazhaboo bihee wa akhaafu any ya’kulahuz zi’bu wa antum ‘anhu ghaafiloon
They said, “Indeed, if the wolf devours him, with so many of us around, then we are really losers.”
قالوا لَئِن أَكَلَهُ الذِّئبُ وَنَحنُ عُصبَةٌ إِنّا إِذًا لَخٰسِرونَ
qaaloo la in akalahuzzi’bu wa nahnu ‘usbatun innaaa izal lakhaasiroon
(Believers are Blessed with God’s Assurances)
When they went away with him, and unanimously decided to throw him into the abyss of the well, we inspired him: “Some day, you will tell them about all this, while they have no idea.”
فَلَمّا ذَهَبوا بِهِ وَأَجمَعوا أَن يَجعَلوهُ فى غَيٰبَتِ الجُبِّ وَأَوحَينا إِلَيهِ لَتُنَبِّئَنَّهُم بِأَمرِهِم هٰذا وَهُم لا يَشعُرونَ
falammaa zahaboo bihee wa ajma’ooo anyyaj’aloohu fee ghayaabatil jubb; wa awhainaaa ilaihi latunabbi ‘annahum bi amrihim haaza wa hum laa yash’uroon
They came back to their father in the evening, weeping.
وَجاءو أَباهُم عِشاءً يَبكونَ
wa jaaa’ooo abaahum ‘ishaaa ‘any yabkoon
They said, “Our father, we went racing with each other, leaving Joseph with our equipment, and the wolf devoured him. You will never believe us, even if we were telling the truth.”
قالوا يٰأَبانا إِنّا ذَهَبنا نَستَبِقُ وَتَرَكنا يوسُفَ عِندَ مَتٰعِنا فَأَكَلَهُ الذِّئبُ وَما أَنتَ بِمُؤمِنٍ لَنا وَلَو كُنّا صٰدِقينَ
qaaloo yaaa abaanaaa innaa zahabnaa nastabiqu wa taraknaa Yoosufa ‘inda mataa’inaa fa akalahuz zi’b, wa maaa anta bimu’minil lanaa wa law kunnaa saadiqeen
They produced his shirt with fake blood on it. He said, “Indeed, you have conspired with each other to commit a certain scheme. All I can do is resort to a quiet patience. May God help me in the face of your conspiracy.”
وَجاءو عَلىٰ قَميصِهِ بِدَمٍ كَذِبٍ قالَ بَل سَوَّلَت لَكُم أَنفُسُكُم أَمرًا فَصَبرٌ جَميلٌ وَاللَّهُ المُستَعانُ عَلىٰ ما تَصِفونَ
wa jaaa’oo ‘alaa qameesi hee bidamin kazib qaala bal sawwalat lakum anfusukum amraa; fasabrun jameel; wallaahul musta’aanu ‘alaa maatasifoon
(Joseph is Taken to Egypt)
A caravan passed by, and soon sent their waterer. He let down his bucket, then said, “How lucky! There is a boy here!” They took him along as merchandise, and God was fully aware of what they did.
وَجاءَت سَيّارَةٌ فَأَرسَلوا وارِدَهُم فَأَدلىٰ دَلوَهُ قالَ يٰبُشرىٰ هٰذا غُلٰمٌ وَأَسَرّوهُ بِضٰعَةً وَاللَّهُ عَليمٌ بِما يَعمَلونَ
wa jaaa’at saiyaaratun fa-arsaloo waaridahum fa adlaa dalwah; qaala yaa bushraa haaza ghulaam; wa asarroohu bi-daa’ah; wallaahu ‘aleemun bimaa ya’maloon
They sold him for a cheap price – a few Dirhams – for they did not have any need for him.
وَشَرَوهُ بِثَمَنٍ بَخسٍ دَرٰهِمَ مَعدودَةٍ وَكانوا فيهِ مِنَ الزّٰهِدينَ
wa sharawhu bisamanim bakhsin daraahima ma’doo datinw wa kaanoo feehi minaz zaahideen
