They said, “By God, God has truly preferred you over us. We were definitely wrong.”
قالوا تَاللَّهِ لَقَد ءاثَرَكَ اللَّهُ عَلَينا وَإِن كُنّا لَخٰطِـٔينَ
qaaloo tallaahi laqad aasarakal laahu ‘alainaa wa in kunnaa lakhaati’een
They said, “By God, God has truly preferred you over us. We were definitely wrong.”
قالوا تَاللَّهِ لَقَد ءاثَرَكَ اللَّهُ عَلَينا وَإِن كُنّا لَخٰطِـٔينَ
qaaloo tallaahi laqad aasarakal laahu ‘alainaa wa in kunnaa lakhaati’een
He said, “There is no blame upon you today. May God forgive you. Of all the merciful ones, He is the Most Merciful.
قالَ لا تَثريبَ عَلَيكُمُ اليَومَ يَغفِرُ اللَّهُ لَكُم وَهُوَ أَرحَمُ الرّٰحِمينَ
qaala laa tasreeba ‘alaikumul yawma yaghfirul laahu lakum wa Huwa arhamur raahimeen
“Take this shirt of mine; when you throw it on my father’s face, his vision will be restored. Bring your whole family and come back to me.”
اذهَبوا بِقَميصى هٰذا فَأَلقوهُ عَلىٰ وَجهِ أَبى يَأتِ بَصيرًا وَأتونى بِأَهلِكُم أَجمَعينَ
izhaboo biqameesee haazaa fa alqoohu ‘alaa wajhi abee yaati baseeranw waatoonee bi ahlikum ajma’een
*12:93 This marks the beginning of the Children of Israel in Egypt. Moses led them out of Egypt a few centuries later.
Even before the caravan arrived, their father said, “I can sense the smell of Joseph. Will someone enlighten me?”
وَلَمّا فَصَلَتِ العيرُ قالَ أَبوهُم إِنّى لَأَجِدُ ريحَ يوسُفَ لَولا أَن تُفَنِّدونِ
wa lammaa fasalatil ‘eeru qaala aboohum innee la ajidu reeha Yoosufa law laaa an tufannidoon
They said, “By God, you are still in your old confusion.”
قالوا تَاللَّهِ إِنَّكَ لَفى ضَلٰلِكَ القَديمِ
qaaloo tallaahi innaka lafee dalaalikal qadeem
When the bearer of good news arrived, he threw (the shirt) on his face, whereupon his vision was restored. He said, “Did I not tell you that I knew from God what you did not know?”
فَلَمّا أَن جاءَ البَشيرُ أَلقىٰهُ عَلىٰ وَجهِهِ فَارتَدَّ بَصيرًا قالَ أَلَم أَقُل لَكُم إِنّى أَعلَمُ مِنَ اللَّهِ ما لا تَعلَمونَ
falammaaa an jaaa’albasheeru alqaahu ‘alaa wajhihee fartadda baseeran qaala alam aqul lakum inneee a’lamu minal laahi maa laa ta’lamoon
They said, “Our father, pray for our forgiveness; we were wrong indeed.”
قالوا يٰأَبانَا استَغفِر لَنا ذُنوبَنا إِنّا كُنّا خٰطِـٔينَ
qaaloo yaaa abaanas taghfir lanaa zunoobanaa innaa kunnaa khaati’een
He said, “I will implore my Lord to forgive you; He is the Forgiver, Most Merciful.”
قالَ سَوفَ أَستَغفِرُ لَكُم رَبّى إِنَّهُ هُوَ الغَفورُ الرَّحيمُ
qaala sawfa astaghfiru lakum Rabbeee innahoo Huwal Ghafoorur Raheem
(In Egypt)
When they entered Joseph’s quarters, he embraced his parents, saying, “Welcome to Egypt. God willing, you will be safe here.”
فَلَمّا دَخَلوا عَلىٰ يوسُفَ ءاوىٰ إِلَيهِ أَبَوَيهِ وَقالَ ادخُلوا مِصرَ إِن شاءَ اللَّهُ ءامِنينَ
falammaa dakhaloo ‘alaa Yoosufa aawaaa ilaihi abawaiyhi wa qaalad khuloo Misra inshaaa’al laahu aamineen
He raised his parents upon the throne. They fell prostrate before him. He said, “O my father, this is the fulfillment of my old dream. My Lord has made it come true. He has blessed me, delivered me from the prison, and brought you from the desert, after the devil had driven a wedge between me and my brothers. My Lord is Most Kind towards whomever He wills. He is the Knower, the Most Wise.”
وَرَفَعَ أَبَوَيهِ عَلَى العَرشِ وَخَرّوا لَهُ سُجَّدًا وَقالَ يٰأَبَتِ هٰذا تَأويلُ رُءيٰىَ مِن قَبلُ قَد جَعَلَها رَبّى حَقًّا وَقَد أَحسَنَ بى إِذ أَخرَجَنى مِنَ السِّجنِ وَجاءَ بِكُم مِنَ البَدوِ مِن بَعدِ أَن نَزَغَ الشَّيطٰنُ بَينى وَبَينَ إِخوَتى إِنَّ رَبّى لَطيفٌ لِما يَشاءُ إِنَّهُ هُوَ العَليمُ الحَكيمُ
wa raf’a abawaihi ‘alal ‘arshi wa kharroo lahoo sujjadaa; wa qaala yaaa abati haaza taaweelu ru’yaaya min qablu qad ja’alahaa Rabbee haqqaa; wa qad ahsana beee iz akhrajanee minas sijni wa jaaa’a bikum minal badwi mim ba’di an nazaghash Shaitaanu bainee wa baina ikhwatee; inna Rabbee lateeful limaa yashaaa’; innahoo Huwal ‘Aleemul Hakeem
