(On the Day of Resurrection)
When they all stand before God,* the followers will say to the leaders, “We used to follow you. Can you spare us even a little bit of God’s retribution?” They will say, “Had God guided us, we would have guided you. Now it is too late, whether we grieve or resort to patience, there is no exit for us.”
وَبَرَزوا لِلَّهِ جَميعًا فَقالَ الضُّعَفٰؤُا۟ لِلَّذينَ استَكبَروا إِنّا كُنّا لَكُم تَبَعًا فَهَل أَنتُم مُغنونَ عَنّا مِن عَذابِ اللَّهِ مِن شَىءٍ قالوا لَو هَدىٰنَا اللَّهُ لَهَدَينٰكُم سَواءٌ عَلَينا أَجَزِعنا أَم صَبَرنا ما لَنا مِن مَحيصٍ
wa barazoo lillaahi jamee’an faqaalad du’afaaa’u lil lazeenas takbarooo innaa kunnaa lakum taba’an fahal antum mughnoona ‘annaa min ‘azaabil laahi min shai’; qaaloo law hadaanal laahu la hadaynaakum sawaaa’un ‘alainaaa ajazi’naa am sabarnaa maa lanaa min mahees
*14:21 Frequently, the Quran talks about the Hereafter in the past tense. This is because those are future events already witnessed by God, and will surely come to pass.
