Such is a community from the past. They are responsible for what they earned, and you are responsible for what you earned. You are not answerable for anything they have done.
تِلكَ أُمَّةٌ قَد خَلَت لَها ما كَسَبَت وَلَكُم ما كَسَبتُم وَلا تُسـَٔلونَ عَمّا كانوا يَعمَلونَ
tilka ummatun qad khalat lahaa maa kasabat wa lakum maa kasabtum wa laa tus’aloona ‘ammaa kaanoo ya’maloon
(Submission (Islam): Abraham’s Religion*)
They said, “You have to be Jewish or Christian, to be guided.” Say, “We follow the religion of Abraham – monotheism – he never was an idol worshiper.”
وَقالوا كونوا هودًا أَو نَصٰرىٰ تَهتَدوا قُل بَل مِلَّةَ إِبرٰهـۧمَ حَنيفًا وَما كانَ مِنَ المُشرِكينَ
wa qaaloo koonoo Hoodan aw Nasaaraa tahtadoo; qul bal Millata Ibraaheema Haneefanw wa maa kaana minal mushrikeen
*2:135 The Quran repeatedly informs us that Submission is the religion of Abraham (3:95, 4:125, 6:161, 22:78). Abraham received a practical “scripture,” namely, all the duties and practices of Submission [the Contact Prayers (Salat), the obligatory charity (Zakat), the fasting of Ramadan, and the Hajj pilgrimage]. Muhammad was a follower of Abraham’s religion, as we see in 16:123; he delivered this Final Testament, the Quran. The third messenger of Submission delivered the religion’s proof of authenticity (see 3:81 and Appendices 1, 2, 24, & 26).
(No Distinction Among God’s Messengers)
Say, “We believe in God, and in what was sent down to us, and in what was sent down to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the Patriarchs; and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and all the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction among any of them. To Him alone we are submitters.”
قولوا ءامَنّا بِاللَّهِ وَما أُنزِلَ إِلَينا وَما أُنزِلَ إِلىٰ إِبرٰهـۧمَ وَإِسمٰعيلَ وَإِسحٰقَ وَيَعقوبَ وَالأَسباطِ وَما أوتِىَ موسىٰ وَعيسىٰ وَما أوتِىَ النَّبِيّونَ مِن رَبِّهِم لا نُفَرِّقُ بَينَ أَحَدٍ مِنهُم وَنَحنُ لَهُ مُسلِمونَ
qoolooo aamannaa billaahi wa maaa unzila ilainaa wa maaa unzila ilaaa Ibraaheema wa Ismaa’eela wa Ishaaqa wa Ya’qooba wal Asbaati wa maaootiya Moosa wa ‘Eesaa wa maaa ootiyan Nabiyyoona mir Rabbihim laa nufarriqoo baina ahadim minhum wa nahnu lahoo muslimoon
Do you say that Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the Patriarchs were Jewish or Christian? Say, “Do you know better than God? Who is more evil than one who conceals a testimony he has learned from God? God is never unaware of anything you do.”
أَم تَقولونَ إِنَّ إِبرٰهـۧمَ وَإِسمٰعيلَ وَإِسحٰقَ وَيَعقوبَ وَالأَسباطَ كانوا هودًا أَو نَصٰرىٰ قُل ءَأَنتُم أَعلَمُ أَمِ اللَّهُ وَمَن أَظلَمُ مِمَّن كَتَمَ شَهٰدَةً عِندَهُ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَمَا اللَّهُ بِغٰفِلٍ عَمّا تَعمَلونَ
am taqooloona inna Ibraaheema wa Ismaa’eela wa Ishaaqa wa Ya’qooba wal asbaata kaanoo Hoodan aw Nasaaraa; qul ‘a-antum a’lamu amil laah; wa man azlamu mimman katama shahaadatan ‘indahoo minallaah; wa mallaahu bighaafilin ‘ammaa ta’maloon
(Abraham’s Courageous Debate)
Have you noted the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord, though God had given him kingship? Abraham said, “My Lord grants life and death.” He said, “I grant life and death.” Abraham said, “God brings the sun from the east, can you bring it from the west?” The disbeliever was stumped. God does not guide the wicked.
أَلَم تَرَ إِلَى الَّذى حاجَّ إِبرٰهـۧمَ فى رَبِّهِ أَن ءاتىٰهُ اللَّهُ المُلكَ إِذ قالَ إِبرٰهـۧمُ رَبِّىَ الَّذى يُحى ۦ وَيُميتُ قالَ أَنا۠ أُحى ۦ وَأُميتُ قالَ إِبرٰهـۧمُ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأتى بِالشَّمسِ مِنَ المَشرِقِ فَأتِ بِها مِنَ المَغرِبِ فَبُهِتَ الَّذى كَفَرَ وَاللَّهُ لا يَهدِى القَومَ الظّٰلِمينَ
alam tara ilal lazee Haaajja Ibraaheema fee Rabbiheee an aataahullaahul mulka iz qaala Ibraaheemu Rabbiyal lazee yuhyee wa yumeetu qaala ana uhyee wa umeetu qaala Ibraaheemu fa innal laaha yaatee bishshamsi minal mashriqi faati bihaa minal maghribi fabuhital lazee kafar; wallaahu laa yahdil qawmaz zaalimeen
(Every Believer Needs Assurance)
Abraham said, “My Lord, show me how You revive the dead.” He said, “Do you not believe?” He said, “Yes, but I wish to reassure my heart.” He said, “Take four birds, study their marks, place a piece of each bird on top of a hill, then call them to you. They will come to you in a hurry. You should know that God is Almighty, Most Wise.”
وَإِذ قالَ إِبرٰهـۧمُ رَبِّ أَرِنى كَيفَ تُحىِ المَوتىٰ قالَ أَوَلَم تُؤمِن قالَ بَلىٰ وَلٰكِن لِيَطمَئِنَّ قَلبى قالَ فَخُذ أَربَعَةً مِنَ الطَّيرِ فَصُرهُنَّ إِلَيكَ ثُمَّ اجعَل عَلىٰ كُلِّ جَبَلٍ مِنهُنَّ جُزءًا ثُمَّ ادعُهُنَّ يَأتينَكَ سَعيًا وَاعلَم أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَزيزٌ حَكيمٌ
wa iz qaala Ibraaheemu Rabbi arinee kaifa tuhyil mawtaa qaala awa lam tu’min qaala balaa wa laakin liyatma’inna qalbee qaala fakhuz arba’atan minat tairi fasurhunna ilaika summaj ‘al ‘alaa kulli jabalin minhunna juz’an summad’uu hunna ya’teenaka sa’yaa; wa’lam annal laaha ‘Azeezun Hakeem
(The Birth of Mary)
God has chosen Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of Amram (as messengers) to the people.
إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصطَفىٰ ءادَمَ وَنوحًا وَءالَ إِبرٰهيمَ وَءالَ عِمرٰنَ عَلَى العٰلَمينَ
innal laahas tafaaa Aadama wa Noohanw wa Aala Ibraaheema wa Aala Imraana ‘alal ‘aalameen
They belong to the same progeny. God is Hearer, Omniscient.
ذُرِّيَّةً بَعضُها مِن بَعضٍ وَاللَّهُ سَميعٌ عَليمٌ
zurriyyatam ba’duhaa mim ba’d; wallaahu Samee’un ‘Aleem
O followers of the scripture, why do you argue about Abraham, when the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed until after him? Do you not understand?
يٰأَهلَ الكِتٰبِ لِمَ تُحاجّونَ فى إِبرٰهيمَ وَما أُنزِلَتِ التَّورىٰةُ وَالإِنجيلُ إِلّا مِن بَعدِهِ أَفَلا تَعقِلونَ
yaaa Ahlal Kitaabi limaa tuhaaajjoona feee Ibraaheema wa maaa unzilatit Tawraatu wal Injeelu illaa mim ba’dih; afala ta’qiloon
Abraham was neither Jewish, nor Christian; he was a monotheist submitter. He never was an idol worshiper.
ما كانَ إِبرٰهيمُ يَهودِيًّا وَلا نَصرانِيًّا وَلٰكِن كانَ حَنيفًا مُسلِمًا وَما كانَ مِنَ المُشرِكينَ
maa kaana Ibraaheemu Yahoodiyyanw wa laa Nasraa niyyanw wa laakin kaana Haneefam Muslimanw wa maa kaana minal mushrikeen
