Quran chapter: Chapter 9: Ultimatum (Bara’ah)‎

Nor do they incur any expense, small or large, nor do they cross any valley, without having the credit written down for them. God will surely reward them generously for their works.

وَلا يُنفِقونَ نَفَقَةً صَغيرَةً وَلا كَبيرَةً وَلا يَقطَعونَ وادِيًا إِلّا كُتِبَ لَهُم لِيَجزِيَهُمُ اللَّهُ أَحسَنَ ما كانوا يَعمَلونَ

wa laa yunfiqoona nafa qatan sagheeratanw wa laa kabeeratanw wa laa yaqta’oona waadiyan illaa kutiba lahum liyajziyahumul laahu ahsana maa kaanoo ya’maloon

(The Importance of Religious Education)

When the believers mobilize, not all of them shall do so. A few from each group shall mobilize by devoting their time to studying the religion. Thus, they can pass the knowledge on to their people when they return, that they may remain religiously informed.

وَما كانَ المُؤمِنونَ لِيَنفِروا كافَّةً فَلَولا نَفَرَ مِن كُلِّ فِرقَةٍ مِنهُم طائِفَةٌ لِيَتَفَقَّهوا فِى الدّينِ وَلِيُنذِروا قَومَهُم إِذا رَجَعوا إِلَيهِم لَعَلَّهُم يَحذَرونَ

wa maa kaanal mu’minoona liyanfiroo kaaaffah; falaw laa nafara min kulli firqatim minhum taaa’ifatul liyatafaqqahoo fiddeeni wa liyunziroo qawmahum izaa raja’ooo ilaihim la’allahum yahzaroon

(The Disbelievers)

O you who believe, you shall fight the disbelievers who attack you – let them find you stern – and know that God is with the righteous.

يٰأَيُّهَا الَّذينَ ءامَنوا قٰتِلُوا الَّذينَ يَلونَكُم مِنَ الكُفّارِ وَليَجِدوا فيكُم غِلظَةً وَاعلَموا أَنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ المُتَّقينَ

yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo qaatilul lazeena yaloonakum minal kuffaari walyajidoo feekum ghilzah; wa’lamooo annal laaha ma’al muttaqeen

(The Hypocrites)

When a sura was revealed, some of them would say, “Did this sura strengthen the faith of anyone among you?” Indeed, it did strengthen the faith of those who believed, and they rejoice in any revelation.

وَإِذا ما أُنزِلَت سورَةٌ فَمِنهُم مَن يَقولُ أَيُّكُم زادَتهُ هٰذِهِ إيمٰنًا فَأَمَّا الَّذينَ ءامَنوا فَزادَتهُم إيمٰنًا وَهُم يَستَبشِرونَ

wa izaa maaa unzilat Sooratun faminhum mai yaqoolu aiyukum zaadat hu haazihee eemaanaa; fa ammal lazeena aamanoo fazaadat hum eemaananw wa hum yastabshiroon

As for those who harbored doubts in their hearts, it actually added unholiness to their unholiness, and they died as disbelievers.

وَأَمَّا الَّذينَ فى قُلوبِهِم مَرَضٌ فَزادَتهُم رِجسًا إِلىٰ رِجسِهِم وَماتوا وَهُم كٰفِرونَ

wa ammal lazeena fee quloobihim maradun fazaadat hum rijsan ilaa rijsihim wa maatoo wa hum kaafiroon

Do they not see that they suffer from exacting trials every year once or twice? Yet, they consistently fail to repent, and fail to take heed?

أَوَلا يَرَونَ أَنَّهُم يُفتَنونَ فى كُلِّ عامٍ مَرَّةً أَو مَرَّتَينِ ثُمَّ لا يَتوبونَ وَلا هُم يَذَّكَّرونَ

‘a wa laa yarawna annahum yuftanoona fee kulli ‘aamin marratan ‘aw marrataini thumma laa yatooboona wa laa hum yazzakkaroon

Whenever a sura was revealed, some of them would look at each other as if to say: “Does anyone see you?” Then they left. Thus, God has diverted their hearts, for they are people who do not comprehend.

وَإِذا ما أُنزِلَت سورَةٌ نَظَرَ بَعضُهُم إِلىٰ بَعضٍ هَل يَرىٰكُم مِن أَحَدٍ ثُمَّ انصَرَفوا صَرَفَ اللَّهُ قُلوبَهُم بِأَنَّهُم قَومٌ لا يَفقَهونَ

wa izaa maaa unzilat Sooratun nazara ba’duhum ilaa ba’din hal yaraakum min ahadin thumman sarafoo; sarafal laahu quloobahum bi annahum qawmul laa yafqahoon

*9:1 & *9:127 This is the only sura that is not prefixed with the Basmalah. This phenomenon has puzzled the students of the Quran for 14 centuries, and many theories were advanced to explain it. Now we realize that the conspicuous absence of the Basmalah serves three purposes: (1) It represents an advance divine proclamation that the idol worshipers were destined to tamper with the Quran by adding 2 false verses (9:128-129). (2) It demonstrates one of the functions of God’s mathematical code in the Quran, namely, to guard the Quran against any alteration. (3) It provides additional miraculous features of the Quran’s code. Due to their extraordinary importance, the details are given in Appendices 24 and 29. One immediate observation is that the number of occurrences of the word “God” at the end of Sura 9 is 1273 (19×67). If the two false verses 128 & 129 are included, this phenomenon – and many more – will vanish.
