By the dawn.
وَالفَجرِ
wal-Fajr
And the ten nights.*
وَلَيالٍ عَشرٍ
wa layaalin ‘ashr
*89:2 The last ten nights of Ramadan, wherein many believers retreat to the masjids (2:187).
By the even and the odd.*
وَالشَّفعِ وَالوَترِ
wash shaf’i wal watr

A profound oath, for one who possesses intelligence.
هَل فى ذٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِذى حِجرٍ
hal fee zaalika qasamul lizee hijr
Have you noted what your Lord did to `Ãd?
أَلَم تَرَ كَيفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعادٍ
alam tara kaifa fa’ala rabbuka bi’aad
There was nothing like it anywhere.
الَّتى لَم يُخلَق مِثلُها فِى البِلٰدِ
allatee lam yukhlaq misluhaa fil bilaad
Also Thamoud, who carved the rocks in their valley.
وَثَمودَ الَّذينَ جابُوا الصَّخرَ بِالوادِ
wa samoodal lazeena jaabus sakhra bil waad
