Quran chapter: Chapter 74: The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)

He looked.

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ

summa nazar

He frowned and whined.

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ

summa ‘abasa wa basar

Then he turned away arrogantly.

ثُمَّ أَدبَرَ وَاستَكبَرَ

summaa adbara wastakbar

He said, “This is but clever magic!

فَقالَ إِن هٰذا إِلّا سِحرٌ يُؤثَرُ

faqaala in haazaaa illaa sihruny yu’sar

“This is human made.”

إِن هٰذا إِلّا قَولُ البَشَرِ

in haazaaa illaa qawlul bashar

I will commit him to retribution.

سَأُصليهِ سَقَرَ

sa usleehi saqar

What retribution!

وَما أَدرىٰكَ ما سَقَرُ

wa maaa adraaka maa saqar

Thorough and comprehensive.

لا تُبقى وَلا تَذَرُ

laa tubqee wa laa tazar

Obvious to all the people.

لَوّاحَةٌ لِلبَشَرِ

lawwaahatul lilbashar

(The Quran’s Common Denominator)

Over it is nineteen.*

عَلَيها تِسعَةَ عَشَرَ

‘alaihaa tis’ata ‘ashar
