Quran chapter: Chapter 66: Prohibition (Al-Tahreem)

O you prophet, why do you prohibit what God has made lawful for you, just to please your wives? God is Forgiver, Merciful.*

يٰأَيُّهَا النَّبِىُّ لِمَ تُحَرِّمُ ما أَحَلَّ اللَّهُ لَكَ تَبتَغى مَرضاتَ أَزوٰجِكَ وَاللَّهُ غَفورٌ رَحيمٌ

yaaa ayyuhan nabiyyu lima tuharrimu maaa ahallal laahu laka tabtaghee mardaata azwaajik; wallaahu ghafoorur raheem

*66:1 Mohammedans around the world believe that Muhammad was infallible. This verse teaches us that he was indeed a fallible human being (18:110, 33:37, 40:66, 80:1).

God has decreed for you the laws dealing with your oaths. God is your Lord, and He is the Omniscient, Most Wise.

قَد فَرَضَ اللَّهُ لَكُم تَحِلَّةَ أَيمٰنِكُم وَاللَّهُ مَولىٰكُم وَهُوَ العَليمُ الحَكيمُ

qad faradal laahu lakum tahillata aymaanikum; wallaahu mawlaakum wa huwal ‘aleemul hakeem

The prophet had trusted some of his wives with a certain statement, then one of them spread it, and God let him know about it. He then informed his wife of part of the issue, and disregarded part. She asked him, “Who informed you of this?” He said, “I was informed by the Omniscient, Most Cognizant.”

وَإِذ أَسَرَّ النَّبِىُّ إِلىٰ بَعضِ أَزوٰجِهِ حَديثًا فَلَمّا نَبَّأَت بِهِ وَأَظهَرَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَيهِ عَرَّفَ بَعضَهُ وَأَعرَضَ عَن بَعضٍ فَلَمّا نَبَّأَها بِهِ قالَت مَن أَنبَأَكَ هٰذا قالَ نَبَّأَنِىَ العَليمُ الخَبيرُ

wa iz asarran nabiyyu ilaa ba’di azwaajihee hadeesan falammaa nabba at bihee wa azharahul laahu ‘alaihi ‘arrafa ba’dahoo wa a’rada ‘am ba’din falammaa nabba ahaa bihee qaalat man amba aka haaza qaala nabba aniyal ‘aleemul khabeer

If the two of you repent to God, then your hearts have listened. But if you band together against him, then God is his ally, and so is Gabriel and the righteous believers. Also, the angels are his helpers.

إِن تَتوبا إِلَى اللَّهِ فَقَد صَغَت قُلوبُكُما وَإِن تَظٰهَرا عَلَيهِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ مَولىٰهُ وَجِبريلُ وَصٰلِحُ المُؤمِنينَ وَالمَلٰئِكَةُ بَعدَ ذٰلِكَ ظَهيرٌ

in tatoobaaa ilal laahi faqad saghat quloobukumaa wa in tazaaharaa ‘alaihi fa innal laaha huwa mawlaahu wa jibreelu wa saalihul mu’mineen; wal malaaa’ikatu ba’da zaalika zaheer

If he divorces you, his Lord will substitute other wives in your place who are better than you; submitters (Muslims), believers (Mu’mens), obedient, repentant, worshipers, pious, either previously married, or virgins.

عَسىٰ رَبُّهُ إِن طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَن يُبدِلَهُ أَزوٰجًا خَيرًا مِنكُنَّ مُسلِمٰتٍ مُؤمِنٰتٍ قٰنِتٰتٍ تٰئِبٰتٍ عٰبِدٰتٍ سٰئِحٰتٍ ثَيِّبٰتٍ وَأَبكارًا

‘asaa rabbuhooo in tallaqakunna anyyubdilahooo azwaajan khairam minkunna muslimaatim mu’minaatin qaanitaatin taaa’ibaatin ‘aabidaatin saaa’ihaatin saiyibaatinw wa abkaaraa

O you who believe, protect yourselves and your families from the Hellfire whose fuel is people and rocks. Guarding it are stern and powerful angels who never disobey God; they do whatever they are commanded to do.

يٰأَيُّهَا الَّذينَ ءامَنوا قوا أَنفُسَكُم وَأَهليكُم نارًا وَقودُهَا النّاسُ وَالحِجارَةُ عَلَيها مَلٰئِكَةٌ غِلاظٌ شِدادٌ لا يَعصونَ اللَّهَ ما أَمَرَهُم وَيَفعَلونَ ما يُؤمَرونَ

yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo qooo anfusakum wa ahleekum naaranw waqoodu han naasu wal hijaaratu ‘alaihaa malaaa’ikatun ghilaazun shidaadul laa ya’soonal laaha maa amarahum wa yaf’aloona maa yu’maroon

O you who disbelieved, do not apologize today. You are being requited only for what you did.

يٰأَيُّهَا الَّذينَ كَفَروا لا تَعتَذِرُوا اليَومَ إِنَّما تُجزَونَ ما كُنتُم تَعمَلونَ

yaaa ayyuhal lazeena kafaroo la ta’tazirul yawma innamaa tujzawna maa kuntum ta’maloon

(The Believers Repent)

O you who believe, you shall repent to God a firm repentance. Your Lord will then remit your sins and admit you into gardens with flowing streams. On that day, God will not disappoint the prophet and those who believed with him. Their light will radiate in front of them and to their right. They will say, “Our Lord, perfect our light for us, and forgive us; You are Omnipotent.”

يٰأَيُّهَا الَّذينَ ءامَنوا توبوا إِلَى اللَّهِ تَوبَةً نَصوحًا عَسىٰ رَبُّكُم أَن يُكَفِّرَ عَنكُم سَيِّـٔاتِكُم وَيُدخِلَكُم جَنّٰتٍ تَجرى مِن تَحتِهَا الأَنهٰرُ يَومَ لا يُخزِى اللَّهُ النَّبِىَّ وَالَّذينَ ءامَنوا مَعَهُ نورُهُم يَسعىٰ بَينَ أَيديهِم وَبِأَيمٰنِهِم يَقولونَ رَبَّنا أَتمِم لَنا نورَنا وَاغفِر لَنا إِنَّكَ عَلىٰ كُلِّ شَىءٍ قَديرٌ

yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo toobooo ilal laahi tawbatan nasoohan ‘asaa rabbukum any-yukaffira ‘ankum sayyi aatikum wa yudkhilakum jannaatin tajree min tahtihal anhaaru yawma laa yukhzil laahun nabiyya wallazeena aamanoo ma’ahoo nooruhum yas’aa baina aydeehim wa bi aymaanihim yaqooloona rabbanaaa atmim lanaa nooranaa waghfir lana innaka ‘alaa kulli shai’in qadeer

O prophet, struggle against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be stern with them. Their abode is Gehenna, and a miserable destiny.

يٰأَيُّهَا النَّبِىُّ جٰهِدِ الكُفّارَ وَالمُنٰفِقينَ وَاغلُظ عَلَيهِم وَمَأوىٰهُم جَهَنَّمُ وَبِئسَ المَصيرُ

yaaa ayyuhan nabiyyu jaahidil kuffaara walmunaa-fiqeena waghluz ‘alaihim; wa ma’waahum jahannamu wa bi’sal maseer

(The Myth of Intercession Shattered)

God cites as examples of those who disbelieved the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. They were married to two of our righteous servants, but they betrayed them and, consequently, they could not help them at all against God. The two of them were told, “Enter the Hellfire with those who deserved it.”

ضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلًا لِلَّذينَ كَفَرُوا امرَأَتَ نوحٍ وَامرَأَتَ لوطٍ كانَتا تَحتَ عَبدَينِ مِن عِبادِنا صٰلِحَينِ فَخانَتاهُما فَلَم يُغنِيا عَنهُما مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيـًٔا وَقيلَ ادخُلَا النّارَ مَعَ الدّٰخِلينَ

darabal laahu masalal lillazeena kafarum ra ata Noohinw wamra ata Loot, kaanataa tahta ‘abdaini min ‘ibaadinaa saalihaini fakhaanataahumaa falam yughniyaa ‘anhumaa minal laahi shai anw-wa qeelad khulan naara ma’ad Daakhileen
