Quran chapter: Chapter 58: The Debate (Al-Mujaadalah)

O you who believe, if you are told, “Please make room,” you shall make room for each other to sit. God will then make room for you. If you are asked to get up and move, get up and move. God raises those among you who believe, and those who acquire knowledge to higher ranks. God is fully Cognizant of everything you do.

يٰأَيُّهَا الَّذينَ ءامَنوا إِذا قيلَ لَكُم تَفَسَّحوا فِى المَجٰلِسِ فَافسَحوا يَفسَحِ اللَّهُ لَكُم وَإِذا قيلَ انشُزوا فَانشُزوا يَرفَعِ اللَّهُ الَّذينَ ءامَنوا مِنكُم وَالَّذينَ أوتُوا العِلمَ دَرَجٰتٍ وَاللَّهُ بِما تَعمَلونَ خَبيرٌ

yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo izaa qeela lakum tafassahoo fil majaalisi fafsahoo yafsahil laahu lakum wa izaa qeelan shuzoo fanshuzoo yarfa’il laahul lazeena aamanoo minkum wallazeena ootul ‘ilma darajaat; wallaahu bimaa ta’maloona khabeer

O you who believe, when you wish to confer with the messenger, you shall offer a charity (to the poor) before you do so. This is better for you, and purer. If you cannot afford it, then God is Forgiver, Most Merciful.

يٰأَيُّهَا الَّذينَ ءامَنوا إِذا نٰجَيتُمُ الرَّسولَ فَقَدِّموا بَينَ يَدَى نَجوىٰكُم صَدَقَةً ذٰلِكَ خَيرٌ لَكُم وَأَطهَرُ فَإِن لَم تَجِدوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفورٌ رَحيمٌ

yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanooo izaa naajitumur Rasoola faqaddimoo baina yadai najwaakum sadaqah; zaalika khairul lakum wa athar; fa il lam tajidoo fa innal laaha ghafoorur Raheem

If you failed to give to charity before conferring, then repented thereafter, God accepts your repentance. You shall observe the contact prayers (Salat), give the obligatory charity (Zakat), and obey God and His messenger. God is fully Cognizant of everything you do.

ءَأَشفَقتُم أَن تُقَدِّموا بَينَ يَدَى نَجوىٰكُم صَدَقٰتٍ فَإِذ لَم تَفعَلوا وَتابَ اللَّهُ عَلَيكُم فَأَقيمُوا الصَّلوٰةَ وَءاتُوا الزَّكوٰةَ وَأَطيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسولَهُ وَاللَّهُ خَبيرٌ بِما تَعمَلونَ

‘a-ashfaqtum an tuqaddimoo baina yadai najwaakum sadaqaat; fa-iz lam taf’aloo wa taabal laahu ‘alaikum fa aqeemus Salaata wa aatuz Zakaata wa atee’ul laaha wa rasoolah; wallaahu khabeerum bimaa ta’maloon

(Choose Your Friends)

Have you noted those who befriended people with whom God is angry? They neither belong with you, nor with them. They deliberately swear lies!

أَلَم تَرَ إِلَى الَّذينَ تَوَلَّوا قَومًا غَضِبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيهِم ما هُم مِنكُم وَلا مِنهُم وَيَحلِفونَ عَلَى الكَذِبِ وَهُم يَعلَمونَ

alam tara ilal lazeena tawallaw qawman ghadibal laahu ‘alaihim maa hum minkum wa laa minhum wa yahlifoona ‘alal kazibi wa hum ya’lamoon

God has prepared for them a severe retribution. Miserable indeed is what they used to do.

أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لَهُم عَذابًا شَديدًا إِنَّهُم ساءَ ما كانوا يَعمَلونَ

a’addal laahu lahum ‘azaaban shadeedan innahum saaa’a maa kaanoo ya’maloon

They used their oaths as a means of repelling from the path of God. Consequently, they have incurred a shameful retribution.

اتَّخَذوا أَيمٰنَهُم جُنَّةً فَصَدّوا عَن سَبيلِ اللَّهِ فَلَهُم عَذابٌ مُهينٌ

ittakhazooo aymaanahum junnatan fasaddoo ‘an sabeelil laahi falahum ‘azaabum muheen

Neither their money, nor their children will help them against God. They have incurred the hellfire, wherein they abide forever.

لَن تُغنِىَ عَنهُم أَموٰلُهُم وَلا أَولٰدُهُم مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيـًٔا أُولٰئِكَ أَصحٰبُ النّارِ هُم فيها خٰلِدونَ

lan tughniya ‘anhum amwaaluhum wa laaa awladuhum minal laahi shai’aa; ulaaa ‘ika As haabun Naari hum feehaa khaalidoon

The Day will come when God resurrects them all. They will swear to Him then, just as they swear to you now, thinking that they really are right! Indeed, they are the real liars.

يَومَ يَبعَثُهُمُ اللَّهُ جَميعًا فَيَحلِفونَ لَهُ كَما يَحلِفونَ لَكُم وَيَحسَبونَ أَنَّهُم عَلىٰ شَىءٍ أَلا إِنَّهُم هُمُ الكٰذِبونَ

yawma yab’asuhumul laahujamee’an fa yahlifoona lahoo kamaa yahlifoona lakum wa yahsaboona annahum ‘alaa shai’; alaaa innahum humul kaaziboon

The devil has possessed them, and has caused them to disregard God’s message. These are the party of the devil. Absolutely, the party of the devil are the losers.

استَحوَذَ عَلَيهِمُ الشَّيطٰنُ فَأَنسىٰهُم ذِكرَ اللَّهِ أُولٰئِكَ حِزبُ الشَّيطٰنِ أَلا إِنَّ حِزبَ الشَّيطٰنِ هُمُ الخٰسِرونَ

istahwaza ‘alaihimush shaitaanu fa ansaahum zikral laah; ulaaa’ika hizbush shaitaaan; alaaa innaa hizbash shaitaani humul khaasiroon

Surely, those who oppose God and His messenger will be with the lowliest.

إِنَّ الَّذينَ يُحادّونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسولَهُ أُولٰئِكَ فِى الأَذَلّينَ

innal lazeena yuhaaaddoonal laaha wa Rasoolahooo ulaaa’ika fil azalleen
