(God Gives the Holy Land to Israel)
“O my people, enter the holy land that God has decreed for you, and do not rebel, lest you become losers.”
يٰقَومِ ادخُلُوا الأَرضَ المُقَدَّسَةَ الَّتى كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَكُم وَلا تَرتَدّوا عَلىٰ أَدبارِكُم فَتَنقَلِبوا خٰسِرينَ
yaa qawmid khulul Ardal Muqaddasatal latee katabal laahu lakum wa laa tartaddoo ‘alaaa adbaarikum fatanqaliboo khaasireenn
They said, “O Moses, there are powerful people in it, and we will not enter it, unless they get out of it. If they get out, we are entering.”
قالوا يٰموسىٰ إِنَّ فيها قَومًا جَبّارينَ وَإِنّا لَن نَدخُلَها حَتّىٰ يَخرُجوا مِنها فَإِن يَخرُجوا مِنها فَإِنّا دٰخِلونَ
qaaloo yaa Moosaaa innaa feehaa qawman jabbaareena wa innaa lan nadkhulahaa hattaa yakhrujoo minhaa fa-iny yakhrujoo minhaa fa innaa daakhiloon
Two men who were reverent and blessed by God said, “Just enter the gate. If you just enter it, you will surely prevail. You must trust in God, if you are believers.”
قالَ رَجُلانِ مِنَ الَّذينَ يَخافونَ أَنعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيهِمَا ادخُلوا عَلَيهِمُ البابَ فَإِذا دَخَلتُموهُ فَإِنَّكُم غٰلِبونَ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَتَوَكَّلوا إِن كُنتُم مُؤمِنينَ
qaala rajulaani minal lazeena yakhaafoona an’amal laahu ‘alaihimad khuloo ‘alaihimul baab, fa izaa dakhaltumoohu fa innakum ghaaliboon; wa ‘alal laahi fatawakkalooo in kuntum mu’mineen
(Despite All the Miracles They Saw)
They said, “O Moses, we will never enter it, so long as they are in it. Therefore, go – you and your Lord – and fight. We are sitting right here.”
قالوا يٰموسىٰ إِنّا لَن نَدخُلَها أَبَدًا ما داموا فيها فَاذهَب أَنتَ وَرَبُّكَ فَقٰتِلا إِنّا هٰهُنا قٰعِدونَ
qaaloo yaa Moosaaa innaa lan nadkhulahaa abadam maa daamoo feehaa fazhab anta wa Rabbuka faqaatilaaa innaa haahunaa qaa’idoon
He said, “My Lord, I can only control myself and my brother. So, allow us to part company with the wicked people.”
قالَ رَبِّ إِنّى لا أَملِكُ إِلّا نَفسى وَأَخى فَافرُق بَينَنا وَبَينَ القَومِ الفٰسِقينَ
qaala Rabbi innee laaa amliku illaa nafsee wa akhee fafruq bainanaa wa bainal qawmil faasiqeen
He said, “Henceforth, it is forbidden them for forty years, during which they will roam the earth aimlessly. Do not grieve over such wicked people.”
قالَ فَإِنَّها مُحَرَّمَةٌ عَلَيهِم أَربَعينَ سَنَةً يَتيهونَ فِى الأَرضِ فَلا تَأسَ عَلَى القَومِ الفٰسِقينَ
qaala fa innahaa muhar ramatun ‘alaihim arba’eena sanah; yateehoona fil ard; falaa taasa ‘alal qawmil faasiqeen
(The First Murder*)
Recite for them the true history of Adam’s two sons. They made an offering, and it was accepted from one of them, but not from the other. He said, “I will surely kill you.” He said, “God accepts only from the righteous.
وَاتلُ عَلَيهِم نَبَأَ ابنَى ءادَمَ بِالحَقِّ إِذ قَرَّبا قُربانًا فَتُقُبِّلَ مِن أَحَدِهِما وَلَم يُتَقَبَّل مِنَ الـٔاخَرِ قالَ لَأَقتُلَنَّكَ قالَ إِنَّما يَتَقَبَّلُ اللَّهُ مِنَ المُتَّقينَ
watlu ‘alaihim naba abnai Aadama bilhaqq; iz qarrabaa qurbaanan fatuqubbila min ahadihimaa wa lam yutaqabbal minal aakhari qaala la aqtulannnaka qaala innamaa yataqabbalul laahu minal muttaqeen
*5:27-31 The names of the two sons involved in this first murder are not relevant. But they are given in the Bible as Abel and Cain (Genesis 4:2-9).
“If you extend your hand to kill me, I am not extending my hand to kill you. For I reverence God, Lord of the universe.
لَئِن بَسَطتَ إِلَىَّ يَدَكَ لِتَقتُلَنى ما أَنا۠ بِباسِطٍ يَدِىَ إِلَيكَ لِأَقتُلَكَ إِنّى أَخافُ اللَّهَ رَبَّ العٰلَمينَ
la’im basatta ilaiya yadaka litaqtulanee maaa ana bibaasitiny yadiya ilaika li aqtulaka inneee akhaaful laaha Rabbal ‘aalameen
“I want you, not me, to bear my sin and your sin, then you end up with the dwellers of Hell. Such is the requital for the transgressors.”
إِنّى أُريدُ أَن تَبوأَ بِإِثمى وَإِثمِكَ فَتَكونَ مِن أَصحٰبِ النّارِ وَذٰلِكَ جَزٰؤُا۟ الظّٰلِمينَ
inee ureedu an tabooo’a bi ismee wa ismika fatakoona min As-haabin Naar; wa zaalika jazaaa’uz zaalimeen
His ego provoked him into killing his brother. He killed him, and ended up with the losers.
فَطَوَّعَت لَهُ نَفسُهُ قَتلَ أَخيهِ فَقَتَلَهُ فَأَصبَحَ مِنَ الخٰسِرينَ
fatawwa’at lahoo nafsu hoo qatla akheehi faqatalahoo fa asbaha minal khaasireen
