“Recall that I inspired the disciples: `You shall believe in Me and My messenger.’ They said, `We have believed, and bear witness that we are submitters.’ “
وَإِذ أَوحَيتُ إِلَى الحَوارِيّـۧنَ أَن ءامِنوا بى وَبِرَسولى قالوا ءامَنّا وَاشهَد بِأَنَّنا مُسلِمونَ
wa iz awhaitu ilal hawaariyyeena an aaminoo bee wa bi Rasoolee qaalooo aamannaa washhad bi annanaa muslimoon
(The Feast)
Recall that the disciples said, “O Jesus, son of Mary, can your Lord send down to us a feast from the sky?” He said, “You should reverence God, if you are believers.”
إِذ قالَ الحَوارِيّونَ يٰعيسَى ابنَ مَريَمَ هَل يَستَطيعُ رَبُّكَ أَن يُنَزِّلَ عَلَينا مائِدَةً مِنَ السَّماءِ قالَ اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ إِن كُنتُم مُؤمِنينَ
iz qaalal hawaariyyoona yaa ‘Eesab na Maryama hal yastatee’u Rabbuka ai yunaz zila alainna maaa’idatam minas samaaa’i qaalat taqul laaha in kuntum mu’mineen
They said, “We wish to eat from it, and to reassure our hearts, and to know for sure that you have told us the truth. We will serve as witnesses thereof.”
قالوا نُريدُ أَن نَأكُلَ مِنها وَتَطمَئِنَّ قُلوبُنا وَنَعلَمَ أَن قَد صَدَقتَنا وَنَكونَ عَلَيها مِنَ الشّٰهِدينَ
qaaloo nureedu an naakula minhaa wa tatama ‘inna quloo bunaa wa na’lama an qad sadaqtana wa nakoona ‘alaihaa minash shaahideen
(Greater Miracles Bring Greater Responsibility*)
Said Jesus, the son of Mary, “Our god, our Lord, send down to us a feast from the sky. Let it bring plenty for each and every one of us, and a sign from You. Provide for us; You are the best Provider.”
قالَ عيسَى ابنُ مَريَمَ اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنا أَنزِل عَلَينا مائِدَةً مِنَ السَّماءِ تَكونُ لَنا عيدًا لِأَوَّلِنا وَءاخِرِنا وَءايَةً مِنكَ وَارزُقنا وَأَنتَ خَيرُ الرّٰزِقينَ
qaala ‘Eesab nu Maryamal laahumma Rabbanaaa anzil ‘alainaa maaa’idatam minas samaaa’i takoonu lanaa ‘eedal li awwalinaa wa aakhirinaa wa Aayatam minka warzuqnaa wa Anta khairur raaziqeen
*5:114-115 The Quran’s overwhelming miracle (Appendix One) is described in 74:35 as “One of the greatest miracles,” and brings with it an uncommonly great responsibility.
God said, “I am sending it down. Anyone among you who disbelieves after this, I will punish him as I never punished anyone else.”*
قالَ اللَّهُ إِنّى مُنَزِّلُها عَلَيكُم فَمَن يَكفُر بَعدُ مِنكُم فَإِنّى أُعَذِّبُهُ عَذابًا لا أُعَذِّبُهُ أَحَدًا مِنَ العٰلَمينَ
qaalal laahu innee munaz ziluhaa ‘alaikum famai yakfur ba’du minkum fa inneee u’azzibuhoo ‘azaabal laaa u’azzibuhooo ahadam minal ‘aalameen

(On The Day Of Resurrection)
God will say, “O Jesus, son of Mary,* did you say to the people, `Make me and my mother idols beside God?’ ” He will say, “Be You glorified. I could not utter what was not right. Had I said it, You already would have known it. You know my thoughts, and I do not know Your thoughts. You know all the secrets.
وَإِذ قالَ اللَّهُ يٰعيسَى ابنَ مَريَمَ ءَأَنتَ قُلتَ لِلنّاسِ اتَّخِذونى وَأُمِّىَ إِلٰهَينِ مِن دونِ اللَّهِ قالَ سُبحٰنَكَ ما يَكونُ لى أَن أَقولَ ما لَيسَ لى بِحَقٍّ إِن كُنتُ قُلتُهُ فَقَد عَلِمتَهُ تَعلَمُ ما فى نَفسى وَلا أَعلَمُ ما فى نَفسِكَ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ عَلّٰمُ الغُيوبِ
wa iz qaalal laahu yaa ‘Eesab na Maryama ‘a-anta qulta linnaasit takhizoonee wa ummiya ilaahaini min doonil laahi qaala Subhaanaka maa yakoonu leee an aqoola maa laisa lee bihaqq; in kuntu qultuhoo faqad ‘alimtah; ta’lamu maa fee nafsee wa laaa a’alamu maa fee nafsik; innaka Anta ‘Allaamul Ghuyoob
*5:116 It is noteworthy that the Quran consistently calls Jesus “son of Mary” and the Bible calls him “son of man”. God knew that some will blaspheme and call him “son of God”!
“I told them only what You commanded me to say, that: `You shall worship God, my Lord and your Lord.’ I was a witness among them for as long as I lived with them. When You terminated my life on earth, You became the Watcher over them. You witness all things.
ما قُلتُ لَهُم إِلّا ما أَمَرتَنى بِهِ أَنِ اعبُدُوا اللَّهَ رَبّى وَرَبَّكُم وَكُنتُ عَلَيهِم شَهيدًا ما دُمتُ فيهِم فَلَمّا تَوَفَّيتَنى كُنتَ أَنتَ الرَّقيبَ عَلَيهِم وَأَنتَ عَلىٰ كُلِّ شَىءٍ شَهيدٌ
maa qultu lahum illaa maaa amartanee bihee ani’budul laaha Rabbeee wa Rabbakum; wa kuntu ‘alaihim shaheedam maa dumtu feehim falammaa tawaffaitanee kunta Antar Raqeeba ‘alaihim; wa Anta ‘alaa kulli shai’in Shaheed
“If You punish them, they are Your constituents. If You forgive them, You are the Almighty, Most Wise.”
إِن تُعَذِّبهُم فَإِنَّهُم عِبادُكَ وَإِن تَغفِر لَهُم فَإِنَّكَ أَنتَ العَزيزُ الحَكيمُ
in tu’azzibhum fa innahum ibaaduka wa in taghfir lahum fa innaka Antal ‘Azzezul Hakeem
God will proclaim, “This is a day when the truthful will be saved by their truthfulness.” They have deserved gardens with flowing streams. They abide therein forever. God is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. This is the greatest triumph.
قالَ اللَّهُ هٰذا يَومُ يَنفَعُ الصّٰدِقينَ صِدقُهُم لَهُم جَنّٰتٌ تَجرى مِن تَحتِهَا الأَنهٰرُ خٰلِدينَ فيها أَبَدًا رَضِىَ اللَّهُ عَنهُم وَرَضوا عَنهُ ذٰلِكَ الفَوزُ العَظيمُ
qaalal laahu haaza yawmu yanfa’us saadiqeena sidquhum; lahum janaatunn tajree min tahtihal anhaaru khaalideena feehaaa abadaa; radiyal laahu ‘anhum wa radoo ‘anh; zaalikal fawzul ‘azeem
To God belongs the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth, and everything in them, and He is Omnipotent.
لِلَّهِ مُلكُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالأَرضِ وَما فيهِنَّ وَهُوَ عَلىٰ كُلِّ شَىءٍ قَديرٌ
lillaahi mulkus samaawaati wal ardi wa maa feehinn; wa Huwa ‘alaa kulli shai’inn Qadeer
