Those who disbelieved said about those who believed, “If it were anything good, they would not have accepted it before us.” Because they were not guided to it, they said, “This is an old fabrication!”
وَقالَ الَّذينَ كَفَروا لِلَّذينَ ءامَنوا لَو كانَ خَيرًا ما سَبَقونا إِلَيهِ وَإِذ لَم يَهتَدوا بِهِ فَسَيَقولونَ هٰذا إِفكٌ قَديمٌ
wa qaalal lazeena kafaroo lillazeena aamanoo law kaana khairam maa sabaqoonaaa ilyh; wa iz lam yahtadoo bihee fasa yaqooloona haazaaa ifkun qadeem
Before this, the book of Moses provided guidance and mercy. This too is a scripture that confirms, in Arabic, to warn those who transgressed, and to give good news to the righteous.
وَمِن قَبلِهِ كِتٰبُ موسىٰ إِمامًا وَرَحمَةً وَهٰذا كِتٰبٌ مُصَدِّقٌ لِسانًا عَرَبِيًّا لِيُنذِرَ الَّذينَ ظَلَموا وَبُشرىٰ لِلمُحسِنينَ
wa min qablihee kitaabu Moosaaa imaamanw-wa rahmah; wa haazaa Kitaabum musad diqul lisaanan ‘Arabiyyal liyunziral lazeena zalamoo wa bushraa lilmuhsineen
(Good News)
46:13Surely, those who say, “Our Lord is God,” then lead a righteous life, will have no fear, nor will they grieve.
إِنَّ الَّذينَ قالوا رَبُّنَا اللَّهُ ثُمَّ استَقٰموا فَلا خَوفٌ عَلَيهِم وَلا هُم يَحزَنونَ
innal lazeena qaaloo Rabbunal laahu summas taqaamoo falaa khawfun ‘alaihim wa laahum yahzanoon
They have deserved Paradise, where they abide forever; a reward for their works.
أُولٰئِكَ أَصحٰبُ الجَنَّةِ خٰلِدينَ فيها جَزاءً بِما كانوا يَعمَلونَ
ulaaa’ika Ashabul Jannati khaalideena feehaa jazaaa’am bimaa kaano ya’maloon
(40: The Age of Decision*)
We enjoined the human being to honor his parents. His mother bore him arduously, gave birth to him arduously, and took intimate care of him for thirty months. When he reaches maturity, and reaches the age of forty,* he should say, “My Lord, direct me to appreciate the blessings You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do the righteous works that please You. Let my children be righteous as well. I have repented to You; I am a submitter.”
وَوَصَّينَا الإِنسٰنَ بِوٰلِدَيهِ إِحسٰنًا حَمَلَتهُ أُمُّهُ كُرهًا وَوَضَعَتهُ كُرهًا وَحَملُهُ وَفِصٰلُهُ ثَلٰثونَ شَهرًا حَتّىٰ إِذا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُ وَبَلَغَ أَربَعينَ سَنَةً قالَ رَبِّ أَوزِعنى أَن أَشكُرَ نِعمَتَكَ الَّتى أَنعَمتَ عَلَىَّ وَعَلىٰ وٰلِدَىَّ وَأَن أَعمَلَ صٰلِحًا تَرضىٰهُ وَأَصلِح لى فى ذُرِّيَّتى إِنّى تُبتُ إِلَيكَ وَإِنّى مِنَ المُسلِمينَ
wa wassainal insaana biwaalidaihi ihsaana; hamalat hu ummuhoo kurhanw-wa wada’at hu kurhanw wa hamluhoo wa fisaaluhoo salaasoona shahraa; hattaaa izaa balagha ashuddahoo wa balagha arba’eena sanatan qaala Rabbi awzi’ neee an ashkura ni’matakal lateee an’amta ‘alaiya wa ‘alaa waalidaiya wa an a’mala saalihan tardaahu wa aslih lee fee zurriyyatee; innee tubtu ilaika wa innee minal muslimeen
*46:15 God knows full well who deserves to go to Heaven and who deserves to go to Hell. It is His law that whomever He puts to death before the age of 40 shall go to Heaven. God’s immense mercy is reflected in the fact that most people have difficulty accepting this divine mercy; they argue: “Put them in Hell!” See Appendix 32.
It is from these that we accept the righteous works, and overlook their sins. They have deserved Paradise. This is the truthful promise that is promised to them.
أُولٰئِكَ الَّذينَ نَتَقَبَّلُ عَنهُم أَحسَنَ ما عَمِلوا وَنَتَجاوَزُ عَن سَيِّـٔاتِهِم فى أَصحٰبِ الجَنَّةِ وَعدَ الصِّدقِ الَّذى كانوا يوعَدونَ
ulaaa’ikal lazeena nata qabbalu ‘anhum ahsana maa ‘amiloo wa natajaawazu ‘an saiyiaatihim feee Ashaabil jannati Wa’das sidqil lazee kaanoo yoo’adoon
Then there is the one who says to his parents, “Woe to you; are you telling me that (after death) I will come back to life? How come those who died before us never come back?” The parents would cry for God’s help and say, “Woe to you; please believe! God’s promise is the truth.” He would say, “Tales from the past!”
وَالَّذى قالَ لِوٰلِدَيهِ أُفٍّ لَكُما أَتَعِدانِنى أَن أُخرَجَ وَقَد خَلَتِ القُرونُ مِن قَبلى وَهُما يَستَغيثانِ اللَّهَ وَيلَكَ ءامِن إِنَّ وَعدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ فَيَقولُ ما هٰذا إِلّا أَسٰطيرُ الأَوَّلينَ
wallazee qaala liwaali daihi uffil lakumaaa ata’idanineee an ukhraja wa qad khalatil quroonu min qablee wa humaa yastagheesaanil laaha wailaka aamin inna wa’dal laahi haqq, fa yaqoolu maa haazaaa illaaa asaateerul awwaleen
Such are the ones stamped as disbelievers among every generation of jinns and humans; they are losers.
أُولٰئِكَ الَّذينَ حَقَّ عَلَيهِمُ القَولُ فى أُمَمٍ قَد خَلَت مِن قَبلِهِم مِنَ الجِنِّ وَالإِنسِ إِنَّهُم كانوا خٰسِرينَ
ulaaa’ikal lazeena haqqa ‘alaihimul qawlu feee umamin qad khalat min qablihim minal jinni wal insi innahum kaanoo khaasireen
They all attain the ranks they have deserved, in accordance with their works. He will pay them for their works, without the least injustice.
وَلِكُلٍّ دَرَجٰتٌ مِمّا عَمِلوا وَلِيُوَفِّيَهُم أَعمٰلَهُم وَهُم لا يُظلَمونَ
wa likullin darajaatum mimmaa ‘amiloo wa liyuwaf fiyahum a’maalahum wa hum laa yuzlamoon
The day will come when those who disbelieved will be introduced to the hellfire: “You have wasted the good chances given to you during your worldly life, and you rejoiced in them. Consequently, today you incur a shameful retribution as a requital for the arrogance you committed on earth without any basis, and for your evil works.”
وَيَومَ يُعرَضُ الَّذينَ كَفَروا عَلَى النّارِ أَذهَبتُم طَيِّبٰتِكُم فى حَياتِكُمُ الدُّنيا وَاستَمتَعتُم بِها فَاليَومَ تُجزَونَ عَذابَ الهونِ بِما كُنتُم تَستَكبِرونَ فِى الأَرضِ بِغَيرِ الحَقِّ وَبِما كُنتُم تَفسُقونَ
wa Yawma yu’radul lazeena kafaroo ‘alan Naari azhabtum taiyibaatikum fee hayaatikumud dunyaa wastam ta’tum bihaa fal Yawma tujzawna ‘azaabal hooni bimaa kuntum tastakbiroona fil ardi bighairil haqqi wa bimaa kuntum tafsuqoon
