Quran chapter: Chapter 40: Forgiver (Ghafer)

Did they not roam the earth and note the consequences for those before them? They used to be stronger than they, and more productive on earth. But God punished them for their sins, and nothing could protect them from God.

أَوَلَم يَسيروا فِى الأَرضِ فَيَنظُروا كَيفَ كانَ عٰقِبَةُ الَّذينَ كانوا مِن قَبلِهِم كانوا هُم أَشَدَّ مِنهُم قُوَّةً وَءاثارًا فِى الأَرضِ فَأَخَذَهُمُ اللَّهُ بِذُنوبِهِم وَما كانَ لَهُم مِنَ اللَّهِ مِن واقٍ

awalam yaseeroo fil ardi fa yanzuroo kaifa kaana ‘aaqibatul lazeena kaanoo min qablihim; kaanoo hum ashadda minhum quwwatanw wa aasaaran fil ardi fa akhazahumul laahu bizunoobihim wa maa kaana lahum minal laahi minw waaq

That is because their messengers went to them with clear proofs, but they disbelieved. Consequently, God punished them. He is Mighty, strict in enforcing retribution.

ذٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُم كانَت تَأتيهِم رُسُلُهُم بِالبَيِّنٰتِ فَكَفَروا فَأَخَذَهُمُ اللَّهُ إِنَّهُ قَوِىٌّ شَديدُ العِقابِ

zaalika bi annahum kaanat taateehim Rusuluhum bilbaiyinaati fakafaroo fa akhazahumul laah; innahoo qawiyyun shadeedul ‘iqaab

(Moses)

We sent Moses with our signs and a profound authority.

وَلَقَد أَرسَلنا موسىٰ بِـٔايٰتِنا وَسُلطٰنٍ مُبينٍ

wa laqad arsalnaa Moosaa bi Aayaatinaa wa sultaanim mubeen

To Pharaoh, Hãmãn, and Qãroon. But they said, “A magician; a liar.”

إِلىٰ فِرعَونَ وَهٰمٰنَ وَقٰرونَ فَقالوا سٰحِرٌ كَذّابٌ

ilaa Fir’awna wa Haamaana wa Qaaroona faqaaloo saahirun kazzaab

And when he showed them the truth from us, they said, “Kill the sons of those who believed with him, and spare their daughters.” Thus, the scheming of the disbelievers is always wicked.

فَلَمّا جاءَهُم بِالحَقِّ مِن عِندِنا قالُوا اقتُلوا أَبناءَ الَّذينَ ءامَنوا مَعَهُ وَاستَحيوا نِساءَهُم وَما كَيدُ الكٰفِرينَ إِلّا فى ضَلٰلٍ

falamma jaaa’ahum bil haqqi min ‘indinaa qaaluq tulooo abnaaa’al lazeena aamanoo ma’ahoo wastahyoo nisaaa’ahum; wa maa kaidul kaafireena illaa fee dalaal

(Moses vs Pharaoh)

Pharaoh said, “Let me kill Moses, and let him implore his Lord. I worry lest he corrupts your religion, or spreads evil throughout the land.”

وَقالَ فِرعَونُ ذَرونى أَقتُل موسىٰ وَليَدعُ رَبَّهُ إِنّى أَخافُ أَن يُبَدِّلَ دينَكُم أَو أَن يُظهِرَ فِى الأَرضِ الفَسادَ

wa qaala Fir’awnu zarooneee aqtul Moosaa walyad’u Rabbahoo inneee akhaafu ai yubaddila deenakum aw ai yuzhira fil ardil fasaad

Moses said, “I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning.”

وَقالَ موسىٰ إِنّى عُذتُ بِرَبّى وَرَبِّكُم مِن كُلِّ مُتَكَبِّرٍ لا يُؤمِنُ بِيَومِ الحِسابِ

wa qaala Moosaaaa innee ‘uztu bi Rabbee wa Rabbikum min kulli mutakabbiril laayu’minu bi Yawmil Hisaab

(God Guides Not the Liars)

A believing man among Pharaoh’s people, who was concealing his belief, said, “How can you kill a man just for saying, `My Lord is God,’ and he has shown you clear proofs from your Lord? If he is a liar, that is his problem, and if he is truthful, you benefit from his promises. Surely, God does not guide any transgressor, liar.

وَقالَ رَجُلٌ مُؤمِنٌ مِن ءالِ فِرعَونَ يَكتُمُ إيمٰنَهُ أَتَقتُلونَ رَجُلًا أَن يَقولَ رَبِّىَ اللَّهُ وَقَد جاءَكُم بِالبَيِّنٰتِ مِن رَبِّكُم وَإِن يَكُ كٰذِبًا فَعَلَيهِ كَذِبُهُ وَإِن يَكُ صادِقًا يُصِبكُم بَعضُ الَّذى يَعِدُكُم إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَهدى مَن هُوَ مُسرِفٌ كَذّابٌ

wa qaala rajulum mu’minummin Aali Fir’awna yaktumu eemaanahooo ataqtuloona rajulan ai yaqoola Rabbi yal laahu wa qad jaaa’akum bil baiyinaati mir Rabbikum wa iny yaku kaaziban fa’alaihi kazibuh wa iny yaku saadiqany yasibkum ba’dul lazee ya’idukum innal laaha laa yahdee man huwa musrifun kazzaab

“O my people, today you have kingship and the upperhand. But who will help us against God’s judgment, should it come to us?” Pharaoh said, “You are to follow only what I see fit; I will guide you only in the right path.”

يٰقَومِ لَكُمُ المُلكُ اليَومَ ظٰهِرينَ فِى الأَرضِ فَمَن يَنصُرُنا مِن بَأسِ اللَّهِ إِن جاءَنا قالَ فِرعَونُ ما أُريكُم إِلّا ما أَرىٰ وَما أَهديكُم إِلّا سَبيلَ الرَّشادِ

yaa qawmi lakumul mulkul yawma zaahireena fil ardi famai yansurunaa mim baasil laahi in jaaa’anaa; qaala Fir’awnu maaa ureekum illaa maaa araa wa maaa ahdeekum illaa sabeelar Rashaad

The one who believed said, “O my people, I fear for you the same fate as the previous opponents.

وَقالَ الَّذى ءامَنَ يٰقَومِ إِنّى أَخافُ عَلَيكُم مِثلَ يَومِ الأَحزابِ

wa qaalal lazee aamana yaa qawmi inneee akhaafu ‘alaikum misla yawmil Ahzaab
