Quran chapter: Chapter 3: The Amramites (Ali-‘Imran)

They remember God* while standing, sitting, and on their sides, and they reflect upon the creation of the heavens and the earth: “Our Lord, You did not create all this in vain. Be You glorified. Save us from the retribution of Hell.

الَّذينَ يَذكُرونَ اللَّهَ قِيٰمًا وَقُعودًا وَعَلىٰ جُنوبِهِم وَيَتَفَكَّرونَ فى خَلقِ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالأَرضِ رَبَّنا ما خَلَقتَ هٰذا بٰطِلًا سُبحٰنَكَ فَقِنا عَذابَ النّارِ

allazeena yazkuroonal laaha qiyaamanw-wa qu’oodanw-wa ‘alaa juno obihim wa yatafakkaroona fee khalqis samaawaati wal ardi Rabbanaa maa khalaqta haaza baatilan Subhaanaka faqinaa ‘azaaban Naar

*3:191 Your god is whoever or whatever occupies your mind most of the time. The true believers are those who remember God most of the time. See 23:84-89 and Appendix 27.

“Our Lord, whomever You commit to Hell are the ones You have forsaken. Such transgressors have no helpers.

رَبَّنا إِنَّكَ مَن تُدخِلِ النّارَ فَقَد أَخزَيتَهُ وَما لِلظّٰلِمينَ مِن أَنصارٍ

rabbanaaa innaka man tudkhilin Naara faqad akhzai tahoo wa maa lizzaalimeena min ansaar

“Our Lord, we have heard a caller calling to faith and proclaiming: `You shall believe in your Lord,’ and we have believed. Our Lord, forgive us our transgressions, remit our sins, and let us die as righteous believers.

رَبَّنا إِنَّنا سَمِعنا مُنادِيًا يُنادى لِلإيمٰنِ أَن ءامِنوا بِرَبِّكُم فَـٔامَنّا رَبَّنا فَاغفِر لَنا ذُنوبَنا وَكَفِّر عَنّا سَيِّـٔاتِنا وَتَوَفَّنا مَعَ الأَبرارِ

rabbanaaa innanaa sami’naa munaadiyai yunaadee lil eemaani an aaminoo bi Rabbikum fa aamannaa; Rabbanaa faghfir lanaa zunoobanaa wa kaffir ‘annaa saiyi aatina wa tawaffanaa ma’al abraar

“Our Lord, shower us with the blessings you promised us through Your messengers, and do not forsake us on the Day of Resurrection. You never break a promise.”

رَبَّنا وَءاتِنا ما وَعَدتَنا عَلىٰ رُسُلِكَ وَلا تُخزِنا يَومَ القِيٰمَةِ إِنَّكَ لا تُخلِفُ الميعادَ

rabbanaa wa aatinaa maa wa’attanaa ‘alaa Rusulika wa laa tukhzinaa Yawmal Qiyaamah; innaka laa tukhliful mee’aad

(God Responds)

Their Lord responded to them: “I never fail to reward any worker among you for any work you do, be you male or female – you are equal to one another. Thus, those who immigrate, and get evicted from their homes, and are persecuted because of Me, and fight and get killed, I will surely remit their sins and admit them into gardens with flowing streams.” Such is the reward from God. God possesses the ultimate reward.

فَاستَجابَ لَهُم رَبُّهُم أَنّى لا أُضيعُ عَمَلَ عٰمِلٍ مِنكُم مِن ذَكَرٍ أَو أُنثىٰ بَعضُكُم مِن بَعضٍ فَالَّذينَ هاجَروا وَأُخرِجوا مِن دِيٰرِهِم وَأوذوا فى سَبيلى وَقٰتَلوا وَقُتِلوا لَأُكَفِّرَنَّ عَنهُم سَيِّـٔاتِهِم وَلَأُدخِلَنَّهُم جَنّٰتٍ تَجرى مِن تَحتِهَا الأَنهٰرُ ثَوابًا مِن عِندِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ عِندَهُ حُسنُ الثَّوابِ

fastajaaba lahum Rabbuhum annee laaa Udee’u ‘amala ‘aamilim minkum min zakarin aw unsaa ba’dukum min ba’din fal lazeena haajaroo wa ukhrijoo min diyaarihim wa oozoo fee sabeelee wa qaataloo wa qutiloo la ukaffiranna ‘anhum saiyi aatihim wa la udkhilanna hum Jannnatin tajree min tahtihal anhaaru sawaabam min ‘indil laah; wallaahu ‘indahoo husnus sawaab

Do not be impressed by the apparent success of disbelievers.

لا يَغُرَّنَّكَ تَقَلُّبُ الَّذينَ كَفَروا فِى البِلٰدِ

laa yaghurrannaka taqal lubul lazeena kafaroo fil bilaad

They only enjoy temporarily, then end up in Hell; what a miserable destiny!

مَتٰعٌ قَليلٌ ثُمَّ مَأوىٰهُم جَهَنَّمُ وَبِئسَ المِهادُ

mataa’un qaleelun summa ma’waahum Jahannam; wa bi’sal mihaad

As for those who observe their Lord, they have deserved gardens with flowing streams; they abide therein forever. Such is the abode given to them by God. What God possesses is far better for the righteous.

لٰكِنِ الَّذينَ اتَّقَوا رَبَّهُم لَهُم جَنّٰتٌ تَجرى مِن تَحتِهَا الأَنهٰرُ خٰلِدينَ فيها نُزُلًا مِن عِندِ اللَّهِ وَما عِندَ اللَّهِ خَيرٌ لِلأَبرارِ

laakinil lazeenat taqaw Rabbahum lahum Jannnaatun tajree min tahtihal anhaaru khaalideena feehaa nuzulammin ‘indil laah; wa maa ‘indal laahi khairul lil abraar

(Righteous Jews and Christians)

Surely, some followers of the previous scriptures do believe in God, and in what was revealed to you, and in what was revealed to them. They reverence God, and they never trade away God’s revelations for a cheap price. These will receive their recompense from their Lord. God is the most efficient in reckoning.

وَإِنَّ مِن أَهلِ الكِتٰبِ لَمَن يُؤمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَما أُنزِلَ إِلَيكُم وَما أُنزِلَ إِلَيهِم خٰشِعينَ لِلَّهِ لا يَشتَرونَ بِـٔايٰتِ اللَّهِ ثَمَنًا قَليلًا أُولٰئِكَ لَهُم أَجرُهُم عِندَ رَبِّهِم إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَريعُ الحِسابِ

wa inna min Ahlil Kitaabi lamai yu’minu billaahi wa maaa unzila ilaikum wa maaa unzila ilaihim khaashi ‘eena lillaahi laa yashtaroona bi Aayaatil laahi samanan qaleelaa; ulaaa’ika lahum ajruhum ‘inda Rabbihim; innal laaha saree’ul hisaab

O you who believe, you shall be steadfast, you shall persevere, you shall be united, you shall observe God, that you may succeed.

يٰأَيُّهَا الَّذينَ ءامَنُوا اصبِروا وَصابِروا وَرابِطوا وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُم تُفلِحونَ

yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanus biroo wa saabiroo wa raabitoo wattaqul laaha la’allakum tuflihoon
