Quran chapter: Chapter 22: Pilgrimage (Al-Hajj)

(Fair Weather Friends)

Among the people there is the one who worships God conditionally. If things go his way, he is content. But if some adversity befalls him, he makes an about-face. Thus, he loses both this life and the Hereafter. Such is the real loss.

وَمِنَ النّاسِ مَن يَعبُدُ اللَّهَ عَلىٰ حَرفٍ فَإِن أَصابَهُ خَيرٌ اطمَأَنَّ بِهِ وَإِن أَصابَتهُ فِتنَةٌ انقَلَبَ عَلىٰ وَجهِهِ خَسِرَ الدُّنيا وَالـٔاخِرَةَ ذٰلِكَ هُوَ الخُسرانُ المُبينُ

wa minan naasi mai ya’budul laaha ‘alaa harfin fa in asaabahoo khairunit maanna bihee wa in asaabat hu fitnatunin qalaba ‘alaa wajhihee khasirad dunyaa wal aakhirah; zaalika huwal khusraanul mubeen

He idolizes beside God what possesses no power to harm him or benefit him; such is the real straying.

يَدعوا مِن دونِ اللَّهِ ما لا يَضُرُّهُ وَما لا يَنفَعُهُ ذٰلِكَ هُوَ الضَّلٰلُ البَعيدُ

yad’oo min doonil laahi maa laa yadurruhoo wa maa laa yanfa’uh’ zaalika huwad dalaalul ba’ed

He idolizes what is more apt to harm him than benefit him. What a miserable lord! What a miserable companion!

يَدعوا لَمَن ضَرُّهُ أَقرَبُ مِن نَفعِهِ لَبِئسَ المَولىٰ وَلَبِئسَ العَشيرُ

yad’oo laman darruhooo aqrabu min naf’ih; labi’salmawlaa wa labi’sal ‘asheer

God admits those who believe and lead a righteous life into gardens with flowing streams. Everything is in accordance with God’s will.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُدخِلُ الَّذينَ ءامَنوا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ جَنّٰتٍ تَجرى مِن تَحتِهَا الأَنهٰرُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَفعَلُ ما يُريدُ

innal laaha yudkhilul lazeena aamanoo wa ‘amilus saalihaati jannaatin tajree min tahtihal anhaar; innal laaha yaf’alu maa yureed

(Happiness Now, and Forever)

If anyone thinks that God cannot support him in this life and in the Hereafter, let him turn completely to (his Creator in) heaven, and sever (his dependence on anyone else). He will then see that this plan eliminates anything that bothers him.

مَن كانَ يَظُنُّ أَن لَن يَنصُرَهُ اللَّهُ فِى الدُّنيا وَالـٔاخِرَةِ فَليَمدُد بِسَبَبٍ إِلَى السَّماءِ ثُمَّ ليَقطَع فَليَنظُر هَل يُذهِبَنَّ كَيدُهُ ما يَغيظُ

man kaana yazunnu allai yansurahul laahu fid dunyaa wal aakhirati fal yamdud bisababin ilas samaaa’i summal yaqta’ falyanzur hal yuzhibanna kaiduhoo maa yagheez

We have thus revealed clear revelations herein, then God guides whoever wills(to be guided).

وَكَذٰلِكَ أَنزَلنٰهُ ءايٰتٍ بَيِّنٰتٍ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَهدى مَن يُريدُ

wa kazaalika anzalnaahu aayaatim baiyinaatinw wa annal laaha yahdee mai yureed

(God: The Only Judge)

Those who believe, those who are Jewish, the converts, the Christians, the Zoroastrians, and the idol worshipers, God is the One who will judge among them on the Day of Resurrection. God witnesses all things.

إِنَّ الَّذينَ ءامَنوا وَالَّذينَ هادوا وَالصّٰبِـٔينَ وَالنَّصٰرىٰ وَالمَجوسَ وَالَّذينَ أَشرَكوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَفصِلُ بَينَهُم يَومَ القِيٰمَةِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلىٰ كُلِّ شَىءٍ شَهيدٌ

innal lazeena aamanoo wallazeena haadoo was saabi’eena wan nasaaraa wal Majoosa wallazeena ashrakooo innal laaha yafsilu bainahum yawmal qiyaamah; innal laaha ‘alaa kulli shai’in shaheed

Do you not realize that to God prostrates everyone in the heavens and the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the mountains, and the trees, and the animals, and many people? Many others among the people are committed to doom. Whomever God shames, none will honor him. Everything is in accordance with God’s will.

أَلَم تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَسجُدُ لَهُ مَن فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَمَن فِى الأَرضِ وَالشَّمسُ وَالقَمَرُ وَالنُّجومُ وَالجِبالُ وَالشَّجَرُ وَالدَّوابُّ وَكَثيرٌ مِنَ النّاسِ وَكَثيرٌ حَقَّ عَلَيهِ العَذابُ وَمَن يُهِنِ اللَّهُ فَما لَهُ مِن مُكرِمٍ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَفعَلُ ما يَشاءُ

alam tara annal laaha yasjudu lahoo man fis samaawaati wa man fil ardi wash shamsu walqamaru wan nu joomu wal jibaalu wash shajaru wad dawaaabbu wa kaseerum minan naasi wa kaseerun haqqa ‘alaihil ‘azaab; wa mai yuhinil laahu famaa lahoo mim mukrim; innallaaha yaf’alu maa yashaaa

(How Terrible is Hell!*)

Here are two parties feuding with regard to their Lord. As for those who disbelieve, they will have clothes of fire tailored for them. Hellish liquid will be poured on top of their heads.

هٰذانِ خَصمانِ اختَصَموا فى رَبِّهِم فَالَّذينَ كَفَروا قُطِّعَت لَهُم ثِيابٌ مِن نارٍ يُصَبُّ مِن فَوقِ رُءوسِهِمُ الحَميمُ

haazaani khasmaanikh tasamoo fee Rabbihim fal lazeena kafaroo qutti’at lahum siyaabum min naar; yusabbu min fawqi ru’oosihimul hameem

*22:19-22 People who have insisted upon going to Hell will inevitably complain: `Had we known how bad this is, we would have behaved differently.’ They will be told that the horrors of Hell have been pointed out to them in the most graphic, though symbolic, terms. It should be noted that Heaven and Hell are almost invariably mentioned together in the Quran.

It will cause their insides to melt, as well as their skins.

يُصهَرُ بِهِ ما فى بُطونِهِم وَالجُلودُ

yusharu bihee maa fee butoonihim waljulood
