*20:1 The role of these Quranic initials as components of the Quran’s awesome mathematical miracle is given in detail in Appendix 1.

We did not reveal the Quran to you, to cause you any hardship.

ما أَنزَلنا عَلَيكَ القُرءانَ لِتَشقىٰ

maaa anzalnaa ‘alaikal Qur-aana litashqaaa

Only to remind the reverent.

إِلّا تَذكِرَةً لِمَن يَخشىٰ

illaa tazkiratal limany yakhshaa

A revelation from the Creator of the earth and the high heavens.

تَنزيلًا مِمَّن خَلَقَ الأَرضَ وَالسَّمٰوٰتِ العُلَى

tanzeelam mimman khalaqal arda was samaawaatil ‘ulaa

The Most Gracious; He has assumed all authority.

الرَّحمٰنُ عَلَى العَرشِ استَوىٰ

ar-Rahmaanu ‘alal ‘Arshis tawaa

To Him belongs everything in the heavens, and the earth, and everything between them, and everything beneath the ground.

لَهُ ما فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَما فِى الأَرضِ وَما بَينَهُما وَما تَحتَ الثَّرىٰ

lahoo maa fis samaawaati wa maa fil ardi wa maa bainahumaa wa maa tahtassaraa

Whether you declare your convictions (or not) He knows the secret, and what is even more hidden.

وَإِن تَجهَر بِالقَولِ فَإِنَّهُ يَعلَمُ السِّرَّ وَأَخفَى

wa in tajhar bilqawli fainnahoo ya’lamus sirra wa akhfaa

God: there is no other god besides Him. To Him belong the most beautiful names.

اللَّهُ لا إِلٰهَ إِلّا هُوَ لَهُ الأَسماءُ الحُسنىٰ

allaahu laaa ilaaha illaa huwa lahul asmaa’ul husnaa

Have you noted the history of Moses?

وَهَل أَتىٰكَ حَديثُ موسىٰ

wa hal ataaka hadeesu Moosa

When he saw a fire, he said to his family, “Stay here. I have seen a fire. Maybe I can bring you some of it, or find some guidance at the fire.”

إِذ رَءا نارًا فَقالَ لِأَهلِهِ امكُثوا إِنّى ءانَستُ نارًا لَعَلّى ءاتيكُم مِنها بِقَبَسٍ أَو أَجِدُ عَلَى النّارِ هُدًى

iz ra aa naaran faqaala li ahlihim kusooo inneee aanastu naaral la’alleee aateekum minhaa biqabasin aw ajidu ‘alan naari hudaa
