Quran chapter: Chapter 13: Thunder (Al-Ra`ad)

A. L. M. R.* These (letters) are proofs of this scripture. What is revealed to you from your Lord is the truth, but most people do not believe.

المر تِلكَ ءايٰتُ الكِتٰبِ وَالَّذى أُنزِلَ إِلَيكَ مِن رَبِّكَ الحَقُّ وَلٰكِنَّ أَكثَرَ النّاسِ لا يُؤمِنونَ

Alif-Laaam-Meeem-Raa; tilka Aayaatul Kitaab; wallazee unzila ilaika mir Rabbikal haqqu wa laakinna aksaran naasi laa yu’minoon

*13:1 These initials constitute a major component of the Quran’s built-in proof of divine authorship, the miraculous mathematical code. See Appendix 1.

God is the One who raised the heavens without pillars that you can see, then assumed all authority. He committed the sun and the moon, each running (in its orbit) for a predetermined period. He controls all things, and explains the revelations, that you may attain certainty about meeting your Lord.

اللَّهُ الَّذى رَفَعَ السَّمٰوٰتِ بِغَيرِ عَمَدٍ تَرَونَها ثُمَّ استَوىٰ عَلَى العَرشِ وَسَخَّرَ الشَّمسَ وَالقَمَرَ كُلٌّ يَجرى لِأَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى يُدَبِّرُ الأَمرَ يُفَصِّلُ الـٔايٰتِ لَعَلَّكُم بِلِقاءِ رَبِّكُم توقِنونَ

allaahul lazee raf’as samaawaati bighairi ‘amadin tarawnahaa summas tawaa ‘alal ‘Arshi wa sakhkharash shamsa walqamara kulluny yajree li ajalim musammaa; yudabbirul amra yufassilil Aayaati la’allakum biliqaaa’i Rabbikum tooqinoon

He is the One who constructed the earth and placed on it mountains and rivers. And from the different kinds of fruits, He made them into pairs – males and females. The night overtakes the day. These are solid proofs for people who think.

وَهُوَ الَّذى مَدَّ الأَرضَ وَجَعَلَ فيها رَوٰسِىَ وَأَنهٰرًا وَمِن كُلِّ الثَّمَرٰتِ جَعَلَ فيها زَوجَينِ اثنَينِ يُغشِى الَّيلَ النَّهارَ إِنَّ فى ذٰلِكَ لَـٔايٰتٍ لِقَومٍ يَتَفَكَّرونَ

wa Huwal lazee maddal arda wa ja’ala feehaa rawaasiya wa anhaaraa; wa min kullis samaraati ja’ala feehaa zawjainis yaini Yughshil lailan nahaar; inna fee zaalika la aayaatil liqawminy yatafakkaroon

On earth, there are adjacent lots that produce orchards of grapes, crops, palm trees – dioecious and non-dioecious. Although they are irrigated with the same water, we prefer some of them over others in eating. These are solid proofs for people who understand.

وَفِى الأَرضِ قِطَعٌ مُتَجٰوِرٰتٌ وَجَنّٰتٌ مِن أَعنٰبٍ وَزَرعٌ وَنَخيلٌ صِنوٰنٌ وَغَيرُ صِنوٰنٍ يُسقىٰ بِماءٍ وٰحِدٍ وَنُفَضِّلُ بَعضَها عَلىٰ بَعضٍ فِى الأُكُلِ إِنَّ فى ذٰلِكَ لَـٔايٰتٍ لِقَومٍ يَعقِلونَ

wa fil ardi qita’um muta jaawiraatunw wa jannaatum min a’naabinw wa zar’unw wa nakheelun sinwaanunw wa ghairu sinwaaniny yusqaa bimaaa’inw waahid; wa nufaddilu ba’dahaa ‘alaa ba’din fil-ukul; inna fee zaalika la aayaatil liqawminy ya’qiloon

(Belief in the Hereafter Required For Salvation)

If you ever wonder, the real wonder is their saying: “After we turn into dust, do we get recreated anew?” These are the ones who have disbelieved in their Lord. These are the ones who have incurred shackles around their necks. These are the ones who have incurred Hell, wherein they abide forever.

وَإِن تَعجَب فَعَجَبٌ قَولُهُم أَءِذا كُنّا تُرٰبًا أَءِنّا لَفى خَلقٍ جَديدٍ أُولٰئِكَ الَّذينَ كَفَروا بِرَبِّهِم وَأُولٰئِكَ الأَغلٰلُ فى أَعنٰقِهِم وَأُولٰئِكَ أَصحٰبُ النّارِ هُم فيها خٰلِدونَ

wa in ta’jab fa’ajabun qawluhum ‘a-izaa kunna turaaban ‘a-inna lafee khalqin jadeed; ulaaa ‘ikal lazeena kafaroo bi Rabbihim wa ulaaa’ikal aghlaalu feee a’naaqihim wa ulaaa’ika Ashaabun Naari hum feehaa khaalidoon

They challenge you to bring doom upon them, rather than turning righteous! Sufficient precedents have been set for them in the past. Indeed, your Lord is full of forgiveness towards the people, in spite of their transgressions, and your Lord is also strict in enforcing retribution.

وَيَستَعجِلونَكَ بِالسَّيِّئَةِ قَبلَ الحَسَنَةِ وَقَد خَلَت مِن قَبلِهِمُ المَثُلٰتُ وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَذو مَغفِرَةٍ لِلنّاسِ عَلىٰ ظُلمِهِم وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَشَديدُ العِقابِ

wa yasta’jiloonaka bis saiyi’ati qablal hasanati wa qad khalat min qablihimul masulaat; wa inna Rabbaka lazoo maghfiratil linnaasi ‘alaa zulmihim wa inna Rabbaka lashadeedul ‘iqaab

Those who disbelieved say, “If only a miracle could come down to him from his Lord (we will then believe).” You are simply a warner – every community receives a guiding teacher.

وَيَقولُ الَّذينَ كَفَروا لَولا أُنزِلَ عَلَيهِ ءايَةٌ مِن رَبِّهِ إِنَّما أَنتَ مُنذِرٌ وَلِكُلِّ قَومٍ هادٍ

wa yaqoolul lazeena kafaroo law laaa unzila ‘alaihi Aayatum mir Rabbih; innamaaa anta munzirunw wa likulli qawmin haad

God knows what every female bears, and what every womb releases, or gains. Everything He does is perfectly measured.

اللَّهُ يَعلَمُ ما تَحمِلُ كُلُّ أُنثىٰ وَما تَغيضُ الأَرحامُ وَما تَزدادُ وَكُلُّ شَىءٍ عِندَهُ بِمِقدارٍ

allaahu ya’lamu maa tahmilu kullu unsaa wa maa tagheedul arhaamu wa maa tazdaad, wa kullu shai’in ‘indahoo bimiqdaar

The Knower of all secrets and declarations; the Supreme, the Most High.

عٰلِمُ الغَيبِ وَالشَّهٰدَةِ الكَبيرُ المُتَعالِ

‘aalimul Ghaibi wash shahaadatil Kaabeerul Muta’aal

It is the same whether you conceal your thoughts, or declare them, or hide in the darkness of the night, or act in the daylight.

سَواءٌ مِنكُم مَن أَسَرَّ القَولَ وَمَن جَهَرَ بِهِ وَمَن هُوَ مُستَخفٍ بِالَّيلِ وَسارِبٌ بِالنَّهارِ

sawaaa’um minkum man asarral qawla wa man jahara bihee wa man huwa mustakhfim billaili wa saaribum binnahaar
