Quran chapter: Chapter 10: Jonah (Younus)

(Rebellious Humans)

When we bestow mercy upon the people, after adversity had afflicted them, they immediately scheme against our revelations! Say, “God’s scheming is far more effective. For our messengers are recording everything you scheme.”

وَإِذا أَذَقنَا النّاسَ رَحمَةً مِن بَعدِ ضَرّاءَ مَسَّتهُم إِذا لَهُم مَكرٌ فى ءايٰتِنا قُلِ اللَّهُ أَسرَعُ مَكرًا إِنَّ رُسُلَنا يَكتُبونَ ما تَمكُرونَ

wa izaaa azaqnan naasa rahmatan min ba’di darraaa’a massat hum izaa lahum makrun feee aayaatinaa; qulil laahu asra’u makraa; inna rusulanaa yaktuboona maa tamkuroon

He is the One who moves you across the land and sea. You get onto the ships, and they sail smoothly in a nice breeze. Then, while rejoicing therein, violent wind blows, and the waves surround them from every side. This is when they implore God, sincerely devoting their prayers to Him alone: “If You only save us this time, we will be eternally appreciative.”

هُوَ الَّذى يُسَيِّرُكُم فِى البَرِّ وَالبَحرِ حَتّىٰ إِذا كُنتُم فِى الفُلكِ وَجَرَينَ بِهِم بِريحٍ طَيِّبَةٍ وَفَرِحوا بِها جاءَتها ريحٌ عاصِفٌ وَجاءَهُمُ المَوجُ مِن كُلِّ مَكانٍ وَظَنّوا أَنَّهُم أُحيطَ بِهِم دَعَوُا اللَّهَ مُخلِصينَ لَهُ الدّينَ لَئِن أَنجَيتَنا مِن هٰذِهِ لَنَكونَنَّ مِنَ الشّٰكِرينَ

huwal lazee yusayyirukum fil barri walbahri hattaaa izaa kuntum fil fulki wa jaraina bihim bi reehin tayyibatinw wa farihoo bihaa jaaa’at haa reehun ‘aasifunw wa jaaa’ahumul mawju min kulli makaaninw wa zannooo ‘annahum ‘uheeta bihim da’a wullaaha mukhliseena lahud deena la’in anjaitanaa min haazihee la nakoonanna minash shaakireen

But as soon as He saves them, they transgress on earth, and oppose the truth. O people, your transgression is only to the detriment of your own souls. You remain preoccupied with this worldly life, then to us is your ultimate return, then we inform you of everything you had done.

فَلَمّا أَنجىٰهُم إِذا هُم يَبغونَ فِى الأَرضِ بِغَيرِ الحَقِّ يٰأَيُّهَا النّاسُ إِنَّما بَغيُكُم عَلىٰ أَنفُسِكُم مَتٰعَ الحَيوٰةِ الدُّنيا ثُمَّ إِلَينا مَرجِعُكُم فَنُنَبِّئُكُم بِما كُنتُم تَعمَلونَ

falammaaa anjaahum izaa hum yabghoona fil ardi bighairil haqq; yaaa aiyuhannaasu innamaa bagh yukum ‘alaaa anfusikum mataa’al hayaatid dunyaa thumma ilainaa marji’ukum fanunabbi ‘ukum bimaa kuntum ta’maloon

The analogy of this worldly life is like this: we send down water from the sky to produce with it all kinds of plants from the earth, and to provide food for the people and the animals. Then, just as the earth is perfectly adorned, and its people think that they are in control thereof, our judgment comes by night or by day,* leaving it completely barren, as if nothing existed the previous day. We thus explain the revelations for people who reflect.

إِنَّما مَثَلُ الحَيوٰةِ الدُّنيا كَماءٍ أَنزَلنٰهُ مِنَ السَّماءِ فَاختَلَطَ بِهِ نَباتُ الأَرضِ مِمّا يَأكُلُ النّاسُ وَالأَنعٰمُ حَتّىٰ إِذا أَخَذَتِ الأَرضُ زُخرُفَها وَازَّيَّنَت وَظَنَّ أَهلُها أَنَّهُم قٰدِرونَ عَلَيها أَتىٰها أَمرُنا لَيلًا أَو نَهارًا فَجَعَلنٰها حَصيدًا كَأَن لَم تَغنَ بِالأَمسِ كَذٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ الـٔايٰتِ لِقَومٍ يَتَفَكَّرونَ

innamaa masalul hayaatid dunyaa ka maaa’in anzalnaahu minas samaaa’i fakhtalata bihee nabaatul ardi mimmaa ya’kulun naasu wal an’aam; hattaaa izaaa akhazatil ardu zukhrufahaa wazzayyanat wa zanna ahluhaaa annahum qaadiroona ‘alaihaaa ataahaaa amrunaa lailan aw nahaaran faja’alnaahaa haseedan ka ‘an lam taghna bil-ams; kazaalika nufassilul aayaati liqawminy yatafakkaroon

*10:24 God, of course, knows whether His judgment will come during the day, or during the night. But it just happens that the earth will be half day and half night when the end of the world comes. Another “scientific miracle” of the Quran.

God invites to the abode of peace, and guides whomever He wills in a straight path.

وَاللَّهُ يَدعوا إِلىٰ دارِ السَّلٰمِ وَيَهدى مَن يَشاءُ إِلىٰ صِرٰطٍ مُستَقيمٍ

wallaahu yad’ooo ilaa daaris salaami wa yahdee many yashaaa’u ilaa Siraatin Mustaqeem

(Heaven and Hell are Eternal)

For the righteous, the reward will be multiplied manifold. Their faces will never experience any deprivation or shame. These are the dwellers of Paradise; they abide therein forever.

لِلَّذينَ أَحسَنُوا الحُسنىٰ وَزِيادَةٌ وَلا يَرهَقُ وُجوهَهُم قَتَرٌ وَلا ذِلَّةٌ أُولٰئِكَ أَصحٰبُ الجَنَّةِ هُم فيها خٰلِدونَ

lil lazeena ahsanul husnaa wa ziyaadatunw wa laa yarhaqu wujoohahum qatarunw wa laa zillah; ulaaa’ika ashaabul jannati hum feehaa khaalidoon

As for those who earned sins, their requital is equivalent to their sin. Humiliation is their lot, and no one beside God can protect them. Their faces will seem overwhelmed by masses of dark night. They will be the dwellers of Hell; they abide therein forever.

وَالَّذينَ كَسَبُوا السَّيِّـٔاتِ جَزاءُ سَيِّئَةٍ بِمِثلِها وَتَرهَقُهُم ذِلَّةٌ ما لَهُم مِنَ اللَّهِ مِن عاصِمٍ كَأَنَّما أُغشِيَت وُجوهُهُم قِطَعًا مِنَ الَّيلِ مُظلِمًا أُولٰئِكَ أَصحٰبُ النّارِ هُم فيها خٰلِدونَ

wallazeena kasabus saiyi aati jazaaa’u saiyi’atin bimislihaa wa tarhaquhum zillah; maa lahum minal laahi min ‘aasimin ka annamaaa ughshiyat wujoohuhum qita’an minal laili muzlimaa; ulaaa’ika Ashaabun Naari hum feeha khaalidoon

(Idols Disown Their Worshipers)

On the day when we summon them all, we will say to those who worshiped idols, “We have summoned you, together with your idols.” We will have them confront each other, and their idols will say to them, “We had no idea that you idolized us.

وَيَومَ نَحشُرُهُم جَميعًا ثُمَّ نَقولُ لِلَّذينَ أَشرَكوا مَكانَكُم أَنتُم وَشُرَكاؤُكُم فَزَيَّلنا بَينَهُم وَقالَ شُرَكاؤُهُم ما كُنتُم إِيّانا تَعبُدونَ

wa yawma nahshuruhum jamee’an thumma naqoolu lil lazeena ashrakoo makaanakum antum wa shurakaaa’ukum; fazaiyalnaa bainahum wa qaala shurakaaa’uhum maa kuntum iyyaanaa ta’budoon

“God suffices as a witness between us and you, that we were completely unaware of your worshiping us.”

فَكَفىٰ بِاللَّهِ شَهيدًا بَينَنا وَبَينَكُم إِن كُنّا عَن عِبادَتِكُم لَغٰفِلينَ

fakafaa billaahi shaheedan bainanaa wa bainakum in kunnaa ‘an ‘ibaadatikum laghaafileen

That is when each soul will examine everything it had done. They will be returned to God, their rightful Lord and Master, and the idols they had fabricated will disown them.

هُنالِكَ تَبلوا كُلُّ نَفسٍ ما أَسلَفَت وَرُدّوا إِلَى اللَّهِ مَولىٰهُمُ الحَقِّ وَضَلَّ عَنهُم ما كانوا يَفتَرونَ

hunaalika tabloo kullu nafsin maaa ‘aslafat; wa ruddoo ilal laahi mawlaahumul haqqi wa dalla ‘anhum maa kaanoo yaftaroon
