A.L.R.* These (letters) are the proofs of this book of wisdom.
الر تِلكَ ءايٰتُ الكِتٰبِ الحَكيمِ
Alif-Laaam-Raa; tilka Aayaatul Kitaabil Hakeem
*10:1 These letters constitute a major portion of the Quran’s awesome mathematical code and proof of divine authorship. See Appendix 1 for details.
Is it too much of a wonder for the people that we inspired a man like them? He (was inspired to say), “You shall warn the people, and give good news to those who believe that they have attained a position of prominence at their Lord.” The disbelievers said, “This is a clever magician!”
أَكانَ لِلنّاسِ عَجَبًا أَن أَوحَينا إِلىٰ رَجُلٍ مِنهُم أَن أَنذِرِ النّاسَ وَبَشِّرِ الَّذينَ ءامَنوا أَنَّ لَهُم قَدَمَ صِدقٍ عِندَ رَبِّهِم قالَ الكٰفِرونَ إِنَّ هٰذا لَسٰحِرٌ مُبينٌ
‘a kaana linnaasi ‘ajaaban ‘an ‘awhainaaa ‘ilaa rajulin minhum ‘an anzirin naasa wa bashshiril lazeena ‘aamanoo ‘anna lahum qadama sidqin ‘inda Rabbihim; qaalal kaafiroona ‘inna haazaa la saahirun mubeen
Your only Lord is God; the One who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then assumed all authority. He controls all matters. There is no intercessor, except in accordance with His will. Such is God your Lord. You shall worship Him. Would you not take heed?
إِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ اللَّهُ الَّذى خَلَقَ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالأَرضَ فى سِتَّةِ أَيّامٍ ثُمَّ استَوىٰ عَلَى العَرشِ يُدَبِّرُ الأَمرَ ما مِن شَفيعٍ إِلّا مِن بَعدِ إِذنِهِ ذٰلِكُمُ اللَّهُ رَبُّكُم فَاعبُدوهُ أَفَلا تَذَكَّرونَ
inna Rabbakumul laahul lazee khalaqas samaawaati wal arda fee sittati aiyaamin thummas tawaa ‘alal ‘Arshi yudabbirul amra maa min shafee’in illaa min ba’di iznih; zalikumul laahu Rabbukum fa’budooh; afalaa tazakkaroon
To Him is your ultimate return, all of you. This is God’s truthful promise. He initiates the creation, then repeats it, in order to reward those who believe and lead a righteous life, equitably. As for those who disbelieve, they incur hellish drinks, and a painful retribution for their disbelieving.
إِلَيهِ مَرجِعُكُم جَميعًا وَعدَ اللَّهِ حَقًّا إِنَّهُ يَبدَؤُا۟ الخَلقَ ثُمَّ يُعيدُهُ لِيَجزِىَ الَّذينَ ءامَنوا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ بِالقِسطِ وَالَّذينَ كَفَروا لَهُم شَرابٌ مِن حَميمٍ وَعَذابٌ أَليمٌ بِما كانوا يَكفُرونَ
ilaihi marji’ukum jamee ‘anw wa’dal laahi haqqaa; innahoo yabda’ul khalqa thumma yu’eeduhoo liyajziyal lazeena aamanoo wa ‘amilus saalihaati bilqist; wallazeena kafaroo lahum sharaabun min hamee minw wa ‘azaabun ‘aleemun bimaa kaanoo yakfuroon
He is the One who rendered the sun radiant, and the moon a light, and He designed its phases that you may learn to count the years and to calculate. God did not create all this, except for a specific purpose. He explains the revelations for people who know.
هُوَ الَّذى جَعَلَ الشَّمسَ ضِياءً وَالقَمَرَ نورًا وَقَدَّرَهُ مَنازِلَ لِتَعلَموا عَدَدَ السِّنينَ وَالحِسابَ ما خَلَقَ اللَّهُ ذٰلِكَ إِلّا بِالحَقِّ يُفَصِّلُ الـٔايٰتِ لِقَومٍ يَعلَمونَ
huwal lazee ja’alash shamsa diyaaa’anw walqamara nooranw wa qaddarahoo manaazila li ta’lamoo ‘adadas sineena walhisaab; maa khalaqal laahu zaalika illa bilhaqq; yufassilul aayaati li qawminy ya’lamoon
Surely, in the alternation of night and day, and what God created in the heavens and the earth, there are proofs for people who are righteous.
إِنَّ فِى اختِلٰفِ الَّيلِ وَالنَّهارِ وَما خَلَقَ اللَّهُ فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالأَرضِ لَـٔايٰتٍ لِقَومٍ يَتَّقونَ
inna fikh tilaafil laili wannahaari wa maa khalaqal laahu fis samaawaati wal ardi la aayaatin liqawminy yattaqoon
(Preoccupation With This World)
Those who are not expecting to meet us, and are preoccupied with this worldly life, and are content with it, and refuse to heed our proofs;
إِنَّ الَّذينَ لا يَرجونَ لِقاءَنا وَرَضوا بِالحَيوٰةِ الدُّنيا وَاطمَأَنّوا بِها وَالَّذينَ هُم عَن ءايٰتِنا غٰفِلونَ
innal lazeena laa yarjoona liqaaa’anaa wa radoo bilhayaatid dunyaa watma’ annoo bihaa wallazeena hum ‘an Aayaatinaa ghaafiloon
these have incurred Hell as their ultimate abode, as a consequence of their own works.
أُولٰئِكَ مَأوىٰهُمُ النّارُ بِما كانوا يَكسِبونَ
ulaaa’ika ma’waahumun Naaru bimaa kaanoo yaksiboon
(God Guides the Believers)
As for those who believe and lead a righteous life, their Lord guides them, by virtue of their belief. Rivers will flow beneath them in the gardens of bliss.
إِنَّ الَّذينَ ءامَنوا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ يَهديهِم رَبُّهُم بِإيمٰنِهِم تَجرى مِن تَحتِهِمُ الأَنهٰرُ فى جَنّٰتِ النَّعيمِ
innal lazeena aamanoo wa ‘amilus saalihaati yahdeehim Rabbuhum bi eemaanihim tajree min tahtihimul anhaaru fee jannaatin Na’eem
Their prayer therein is: “Be You glorified, our god,” their greeting therein is, “Peace,” and their ultimate prayer is: “Praise be to God, Lord of the universe.”
دَعوىٰهُم فيها سُبحٰنَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَتَحِيَّتُهُم فيها سَلٰمٌ وَءاخِرُ دَعوىٰهُم أَنِ الحَمدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ العٰلَمينَ
da’waahum feehaa Subhaanakal laahumma wa tahiyyatuhum feehaa salaam; wa aakhiru da’waahum anil hamdu lillaahi Rabbil ‘aalameen
